MONTHLY COHNTIL MEETING.
ROUTINE BUSINESS.
Ci. H. M. Corbett, chairman, presided over a full meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council yesterday afternoon.
FELICITATIONS TO MR. HOOVER.
A letter from Mr W. F, Bt>tyle, American Consul at Auckland, expressed his pleasure to loam that Mr Herbert Hoover, President of. the United States of America, was a.t one time; a resident of but he regretted that he could not. have, the pleasure of conveying to Mr Hoover t;ho felicitations of the County Conn--cil, as the usual channel was through the; British Ambassador. He suggested that the council should forward its communication toi Sir Esme Howard, Ambassador of Great Britain at Washington, asking him to bring it to the. notice of the Pnesidtent. It was decided, owing to the procedure involved, not to go on with the proposed message.
FRANKTON ROAD METALLING. The assistant engineer of the Public Works Depar.tnieyil, Paerca, advised that it was doubtful as to whether the Minister would) approve of free money being authorised for the metalling of thi s road, more particularly as previous wclrk of this nature on the same road had carried a £ for £ subsidy. The writer said he was aware that the locality served wag not a particularly rich one, but he would be glad if the council would advise as to whether it was prepared to provide any contribution towards the c,ost of the work. As the subject .was at present bet> fore the Minister, action was deferred awaiting his decision. NEW DRAINAGE DISTRICT. The Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs farwarded' an announcement of the gazetting of. thq Tirohia-Roto-kohu Drainage District, with the declaration- that the number of trustees would consist of five persons. NGAHINA BRIDGE REPAIRS. The Hauraki Plains County Council wrote, intimating its preparednes.s to meet its proportion of the expenses of repairing the Ngahina bridge. GOLDEN CROSS ROAD. Mr W. N. Verry, schoolteacher, Golden Gross, wrote asking for repairs to be etfected to the Waitekauri-. Golden Cross road. It was in an appalling state, and as he was conveying Children over it every day he would: like it to be put i-n ordfer before- the advent of winter. The .writer suggested that; all that was necessary was for a supply of good binding material to be spread over, the worst bumps. This metal could be obtained from a tip-head about a chain off the road at Golden Cross. The engineer whs authorised to go into the request. NOXIOUS WEED DESTROYER. A letter was received from Mr D. H. Clarkson, Otahuhu, saying he had noticed through the paper that the district was badly menaced by ragwort and asking for an-opportunity to demonstrate to the council a noxious weed destroyer of his which was cheap and effective. A motion was carried that inquiries be made and conditions of demonstration, etc., be- obtained. DRAINS NEAR WAITEKAURI. A letter from Mr E. A. Hodges, Waitekaui i, asked permission to lay drain l -' under the Golden Cross road at his property, and to run electric wires over the road. Permission to lay the drains was granted, but the question of the wires involved the Telegraph Department, a.nd was left to Mr Hadges’ own discretion. REQUEST FOR BRIDGE. The secietary of the Waimata School Committee’ wrote asking the council to erect a bridge over the creek on the road between Hqnry’s and Sutton’s- farms, as at present the school children had to ford the stream by means of large s.toneis. Cr. Mason said that as far as he knew the timber fair constructing the bridge was -already there. The engineer maintained that owing to floods the construction would be too expensive. fhe question was referred to the engineer for a report. WATER SUPPLY. Cr. W. F. Johnstone asked whether, through the new dam, pressure of water had been increased. He requested the engineer’s opinion. The engineer stated that according to figures the pressure would be very little increased. The chairman proffered the Opinion that there was sufficient water available if the pipes were big enough to -carry it. SYSTEM OF RATING. A petition for a poll on the; question of rating; on the unimproved value was received from Mr O. Bjerring, Waihi, on behalf of 16 per cent, or over of the toital ratepayers. The chairman said that the voting should bq held at the same time as the county election, So as to avoid extra expense. It was decided accordinglv, and to adivse Mr Bjefiring to this effect. HIKUTAJA CREEK. On the 'motion of Cr. Robinson it was decided ta write to thq Public Works Department anent the washout and erosion by the Hikutaia creek. With winter approaching it created danger to both highway and bridge. TIROHIA STATION ROAD. Cr. Johnstone asked why, after a lapse of two months, no action hadi been taken in regard to the above road. The original agreement was that the settlers should be responsible for the carting of metal, but now he thought they should -not be. The engineer stated that the 133yds of metal, with the help of two trucks, cduld be laid in two days.
