What remained of the Nqw Zealand Crown Mines Company’s buildingg and plant at Karangab'ake, including about 60,000 ft of timber, was sold by auction an Wednesday by Mr H. Jackson, of Te Aroha. Bidding .was brisk, and disposed! of. realised between £5OO and £6OO.
At a meeting of the Te Aroha Chamber cif Commerce last week it was decided to write to the Minister in charge of the Tourist department requesting that the assjsjtanc.e of the Ethnologist and the Cawt.hron Institute be given, or a.ny other scientific bodies that might be able to. help, to find a remedy for the sandfly nuisance. It was stated that thousands of pounds had been lost to the town because of the; sandflies. Local residents got used to the pest and took little notice, and. were not aware of the, effect on visitors. Wherever one went it wa.s found that Te Aroha was known an ( | i erne mbaed chiefly because of its sandflies.
No fcy.er than 175 applications have been received for tliq position of assistant traffic inspector at Palmerston North, rcii lered vacant by the resignation of. Mr F. A. Phelan, who has taken over the position of service 'Officer for the Wellington Automobile Association. The applications were from all parts of the Dominion, and ranged ft om men who have worn the solicitor’s wig and gown to those who have made use of the crafts.
