ROAD TO WHANGAMATA.
SETTLERS DESIRE SUBSIDY. DEPUTATION TO MINISTER. Mr H. M. Corbqtt, chairman of the Ohinemuri County Council, introduced to the Minister of Public Works cn Friday a deputation of settlers on that section of the Whangamata road near Waihi, and! urged the granting of a subsidy at the rate of £3 for £1 to assist the settlers to have the 4% miles beyond the existing road metal-, led. The settlers were prepared to be ratejt up to Id in the £ on. the capita! valuation for a £3OOO loan. It. was essential for successful. faraping to have a road over which fertilisers could be carted in and cream carted out. The settlers had beep without a road of any sort for 15 years until last summer, when ,the formation was done. The settled land was a narrow strip, and the road would eventually become an important, one, as much land further on c.ould be opened up, upd .much tourist traffic to Mercury Bay w<ould eventually be carried. The Minister promised to have the matte;;- looked into.
