SWIMMING CARNIVAL.

PAEROA CLUB’S EFFORT. ANOTHER SUCCESS ATTAINED. The Paci’oa Swimming Club’s second carnival this season eventuated at the Municipal Baths last evening, and! in every way was a pronounced success. Competitors included representatives of. the, Morrinsville, Wajhi, Ngatea, Ponsonby (Auckland), and Paeroa clubs, while the spectators, drawn from every part p(f the district, fully taxed the accommodation. Included amongst tile visitors were) the Hon. E. A. Ransom, Minister of Public Works, and ministerial party, Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., and Miss Ena Stockley, New Zealand champion lady swimmer and lepresentative at the Olympic Games. Miss Stockley was also a competitor in three events at the carnival.

At the invitation of. the president, Mr W. D. Nicholas, His*Worship the Mayor, Mr W. Marshall, qxtended a hearty welcome to the visitors and competitors, and thanked them for their support. Parti ularly did he thank Miss Stockley, who was present at no little inconvenience to herself, and who had willingly to give lessons in swimming, to schoolch ildien the next dfcyM? A. M. Samuel, M.P. for Thames, also sp' kc a few words, and introduced the Hon. E. A. Ransom, Minister of. Public Works, to the gathering. He congratulated the Borough Council and the officials of the Club upon tlic, .work done to make swimming popular. As an old swimmer he was keenly interested in the movement, and asked the president to accept a silver cup for competition amongst the school children for next .season. The Hon. E. A. Ransom thanked the Club for its invitation to be present at tiie carnival. He spoke in appreciation of the fine baths and compli-. mented the municipality on having such a grand Like, Mr Samuel, he thought swimming should, be included in the school curriculum throughout the Dominion, and should be made compulsory. Ha. was a believer in sport, as it made cine more fit to carry but one’s serious business, in life; —work—and swimming was one of the finest recreations. Mr Ransom then wished the club every success, and declared the carnival officially open.

J ust after Mr Ransom had declared the c.arhiv*l open Miss Wanda Taiboys, amidst applause k presented Miss Stockley with, a beautiful bouquet in appreciatioin of her visit.
