THE BOY EARL HAIG.
ENROLMENT AS A “ WOLF CUB.”
Onq of the last wishes of the late Field-Marshall Earl Haig was fulfilled in January, when, in the presence of Countess Haig, her son, Earl Haig of Beniersyde, and her daughter, Lady Irene Haig, were enrolled as a “ Wolf Cub ” and “ Brownie ” respectively, in the troops anil packs attached to the British Legion Poppy Factory at Richmond, Surrey. These, organisations are known as; “ Earl Haig’s Own,” and “ Countess Haig’s Own,“ and the ceremony took place at Cardigan House, Richmond Hill, the group headquarters. Ti. the very room where his father made his, last speech, “ Cub Dawick,” as the young Earl will be officially known in the pack, pledged: his honour in sturdy tones : “ Always to be a good Cub, and to give in to the Old Wolves ” — the latter being a promise to. respect the judgment of. his “ Cub Dawick ” was then made honorary Pack Leader, and was given a stentorious welcome, which took the-form of a “ grand howl ” by the other cubs (the sons of ex-servicemen employed at the factory), who jverq grouped i' l a circle round’ a toltem pole.
The enrolment, of Lady Irene Haig was somewhat overshadowed by the fact that she was indisposed, and it was a very white-looking little Brownie who was lejj in by Lady Victoria Haig, and who promised “t° honour God and the King, and to do her best at all times.” She was also aecprded a “ grand howl ” by tiny Brownies seated round a huge toadstool. Lady Haig, in a Short speech following the ceremony, said she realised that thq honour accorded to her son had not yet been earned, and was due entirely to the work of hi s father. She hoped, however, that in time lie would' show that he was in truth worthy of that honour.
