Sir Joseph Ward on taking oilice promised a thorough investigation cf the Taupo railww- True to his: wcmd, the investigation was carried out, with the result that, after going into all evidence for and against, work on the railway has ceased and the men are to bq transferred: elsewhere- Publis opinion has been vindicated. But in the face of well known facts, often reiterated, the South Island Hues arc to be proceeded with, together with the Poverty Bay onej at once, and no mention is made of. the long-promised connecting link between Paeroa and Pokenn. That this section of line will pay its way has never been questioned, and that it is urgently needed to relieve the congestion and delay at Frankton Junction is admitted. Why is it held: up ? and why is the proposal completely ignored in all Government references to new railway construction ? Sunoly the logjcal place to shift the Taupo construction men to, and the easiest and least expensive place for transporting them to as well, is the Pae-roa-Pokcno line. It is to be hoped the Minister of. Public Works will have Something concrete to say on the matter when he visits Paeroa next week.
