THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. MONDAY, MARCH 11. 1929. THE WHANGAMATA ROAD.

The Ohinemuri County Council deserves all support in its request to have the Whangamata road declared, a main highway : for that road', now considered more or less a country byway—gi eat. though the; traffic along it has been over the week-ends, this summer—in the near future will, became increasingly popular with, tourists and; holiday-makers, and', of much more importance, of increased necessity as an outlet and commercial highway for thq people living on the east coast of the peninsula. The rough outline of. a rpbd as it; now stands is a compliment to. the surveyors and field engineers instrumental in its formation, as far as the route chosen and actual grades: are concerned-, hut there the; praise ends. Having only a mud surface, the horrible nightmare of quagmires as in the previous’ winter will be present this year again, quagmires through which even horse a.nd bullefck teams pass with difficulty. After all the monqy and engineering ability expended on the road, it seems a terrible waste to let it remain in the category of a, fair weather route, only really usable during the summer months when the clay is. bakejdl hard. Declared a main highway, it would have to be metalled, and that doneone urgently-needed section of the, coast road would; be efficiently completed. The whole road round the peninsula cannot be metalled a.t once; parts, are not properly formed, and small sections are not in hand yet, besides which the traffic over setae portions does not warrant metalling at present. But the Waihi-Whangamata. ■stretch certainly does, and now, before it is top late for this winter, the work should be gone pm with.
