THE HAURAKI REGIMENT.

PROMOTIONS, ETC. Lieutenant. W. H. Evans, has been promoted to captain. Staff Sergeant-Major Paterson has returned to Waihi from Rotorua. An appointment to Rot,or.ua is expected shortly. CAMP. The camp at Ngaruawahia was (most successful in every way. The battalion was inspected by Major-General Young, Commander of the N.Z. Forces, on February 20. After watching field work and ceremonial evolutions General Young highly commended the battalion for general efficiency and smartness on parade. He Picked Sergeant C. Cameron, of Tauranga, as, the best turned put spider on parade, as a result of. which the sergeant was presented with a polished German shell-.casc, a trophy of the late war.

On the Thursday following the Brigadier-General in Command, Northern Command, inspected the battalion and complimented the memberis on aU points.

The inter-company General Effi 1 ciency Sjiield was competed for far the first time. Maximum points obtainable were drill 20 ; , ceremonial 20, fieldwork 20 of. lines 10. inspection 10, conduct 10, sports 10j The Machine-gun Company, commanded by Major W. C. I. Sumner, were adjudged the winners. The men forming this company wqre drawn from Wai.hi, Tauranga, Rotorua, and Cambridge, apd the shield will be exhibited in those towns as soon as it is, engraved.

A cup presented by Mr J. Pletcher for inter-.eoinpany guard mounting was won by B Company, Ray of L’lquty. Sports, meetings were held every nijjhL, with the principal one on the Friday, the team consisting of a leader and. seven men from each platoon, with 15 platoons c,ompeti.ng. The highest, aggregate wa,s ; rqgistered by a Waihi. team, consisting of Sergeant E. Saunders, Pvts. T. McNamara, K. Birchall, D. McConnell, R. Lockett, B. Aitken, w. Ludwig, C. Dillamore, all of whom will receive a silver medal. The battalion band of 2S instruments was. also in camp and contributed many programmes. Besides playing at the officers’ mess in the even-, ing, an innovation was introduced oy their peifwming at the men’s midday dinner. The officers’ mess, was a record as to numbers, 36 being present. The last two days were devoted to strategical exercises, with the North Auckland Reg;iment. HIGH SCHOOL CARETS. ROTORUA. Four officers and. 135 boys participated in the. School Cadet camp at Rotorua. Various operations -were carried out, the boys exhibiting splendid spirit. The Brigadier-General commanding the Northern Command, who inspected the unit on the 4th hist., was. so pleased with the turnout, improvement, and general cleanliness, that as a reward lie promised to. provide free bus accctomodation for all the boys to enable, tjicm to witness the artillery shooting. Each night community concerts were held, the performers in in.oSjt cases boding drawn from the c.aidets themselves. The military exercises were terminated by a blank ammunition atta,cjk on the barracks. Major A. R. Ryder, hcadmastejr of. the school, was in command, 'with Lieutenant V. J. Innes, N.Z.S.Ci., as adjutant. THAMES. The Thames High School Cadets go into camp to-day pn the scilioolgrcuuds. OvCjV 100 boy.s, are expected to attend, and will be instructed! in close order drill and elementary held work. Lieut. H. H. Marshall w/ill i>e in command, with Lieut. V. J. (Innas, N.Z.S.C., as adjutant. HAMILTON. The Hamilton High School Cadets to the number of some 150 “will g.o under canvas at the Waikatfo camp this week.. ARTILLERY. ' The, 20th Pack Battery,/N.Z. Artillery, went into camp o/n the Race-, course at Rotorua the week (before last. On the Tuesday and Wednesday of last, week they indulged; in live -hell artillery Are ovt'r the new range at Henio Gorge. The .3rd Field Flattery, which has taken the Pack Battery’s place on’the racecourse, will fire live shells tomorrow and Wednesday. 5.Z. DLVISjION, ROYAL NAVY, Vice-Admiral A l . G. Hotham,. who was commander of the New Zealand station from 1920-213, has retired. S. C. Keeley and A. C. Shaw, of Cambridge, and C. Fax, of Waihi, have been accepted as referuits in the regular Navy, N.Z. Division.
