SCHOOL SPORTS.

PLAINS CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING NGATEA WINS THE CUP. The Hauraki Plains Primary Schools’ first annual athletic championship sports, held at Ngatea on Friday, proved to be the finest sports meeting yet held in the district. Competition throughout was exceptionally closq, and the 53 events on tlie programme necessitated the ruiv ning of a race every five minutes; but s,o good was the organising that though the shorts were half an hour late in commencing, the full programme; and two run-offs for ties were finished within the time. There is no doubt that these sports will develop into a very attractive annual event, for neither competitor*, nor spectators had anything to cavil at. The track was in good the peat having benefited considerably by the heavy rain on Wednesday and Thursday nights. This rain also : prevented dust from being; raised by the spectators. Just over 400 adults paid for admission, but there; must have been considerably more children. The Turua Town Band played selections throughout, the day. The Cup, donated for the purpose by the trustees, of. the Herbert Smith Fund, Hamilton, was won by tlie Ngatea school,' which secured 20 championship points. The Rose Bowl, donated by Mrs W. Benny, of Kdihere, for the runners-up, was won by the Netheyton school, with nine champion-* Ship points. The football, donated byMr A. H. McClean, of Ngatea, was awarded to the Turua school, which secured six points. Fifty gold or sib ver medals have been purchased with funds subscribed for the purpose, and* medals have; been received from 'Messis H. and A. Dent, McKay and McKay, W. F. Jones, of Ngatea ; A ; . J. Holman, of Thames ; and the people of Mangatarata, while Mr F. E. St.impson, of Ngatea, presented a bridle, which was awarded to a 220yds high school boys’ race. Ngatea’s 20 points w-ofe won by the Sparrow children, w.ho secured six firsts and 'helped to win the girls’ relay rac.e, and by the Neate children, who won three firsts. The Netherton school gained three firsts and three seconds, Turua one first and four seconds, Kerepeehi five Kopuarahi and. Kaihere each two firsts and one second, Pipiroa two. seconds, and Mangatarata and Patetongp. eac.h one second. The Sparrow children won six first prize medals and the Neate children three ; J. Hamill, of Kere*. peehi, won three; second prize medals, G. Hicks, of Turua, two. firsts and a second, J. Foote of Kaihere, and Miss J. Adam, of Netherton, each a first and a second, and Miss P. Clark, of Pipiroa, two second prize medals. Other prize winners wan a. medal each.

The arrangements for the; -sports were in the capable hands of Mr, C. S'. Foster, secretary hf. the codmittee appointed by the several school committees in the country. The Ngatea School Committee und<ej.'toclk the preparation of the ground,, and the result of their efforts was widely commended. Members of the different school committees acted in various capacities, during the day, the important positions being filled) as follows : Starters, Messrs L. James and E. C.
