PLAINS COUNTY MATTERS
INTEREST SHOWN BY SETTLEKS.
COUNCILLORS QUESTIONED. At a meeting, of settlers of Waitokarurua and Pipiroa at Waitakaruru on Thursday evening, last for the purpose of forming a ratepayers’ assetelation, advantage was taken of the; presence of Crs. Walton, Parfitt., and Harris to elicit information apperi taining to the operatiops of, the County Council. In answer to a question as to what action the council was taking to remove the; corrugations, from the roads, the county chairman suggested that an inspection be made of Wilson’s Road or Orchard East Road, where the council's new power grader* scarifier had been working. RED ROADS. Concerning the; merits of red metal, Mr. Walton said that question was too. big to be answered simply. The council used so much metal that the question of ability to supply in the quantities required by the council at stated times had to be taken into consideration. Up to the present the; red metal was the only one able to fulfil these requirements. It would be recognised that this period of the year was the worst in which to vie;w red roads. In the winter time the red roads would c.ompare more than favourably with other countits’ roads. The use of metaj chips would) entail, widening the roajfe and reducing the camber so that the chips would remain on the; road. MAHUTU ROAD BRIDGE.
Mr A. Wylie asked whether the council had any plans concerning the improvement to the bridge at Hud-’ son’s.
Cr. Harris pointed out that the bridge had been built by the Govern? ment in unsuitable material. He proposed to ask the; Minister on his visit to make a grant or a subsidy to enable a new bridge to be provided. The Ratepayers' Association could) dp. good work by standing solidly behind him when the request to the Minister was made.
POKENO HIGHWAY.
Mr F. Pinchess suggested using metal, from the, quarry near the water supply dam instead of. red cetal. Mr Walton said that the section o£ the highway between W a i ta k aruru and l the dam was the greatest liability of the Waitakaruru riding. He did not know that the suggested quarry had metal of any particular merit.
Mr Pearson expressed the opinion that the red rpiads of; the Plains were better than the roads made of other metal in any Other county. COUNTY ROADING SCHEME. On the motion of .Mr Neate it was decided to invite the c,ounty chairman and riding members- to the; next meeting, on March 25, to explain the conn-, ty roading scheme designed by Mr Walton. The meeting closed with votes of thanks to Messrs E. L. Walton, C. W. Parfitt, and C. W. Harris for attending, and to Mr P. B. Henrfy for the information given.
