THAMES, VALLEY CLUB. INAUGURAL. RUN. Leaving Paeroa at 10’.30 Thursday morning, the Thames Valley Jersey" Bcreders’ Club journeyed by car to Waikino and Waihi Plains, on their inaugural run. The first visit was to Mr Maurice Crimmins’ farm at Waikino. On arrival at the beautiful homestead the visitors wqre met and invited to lunch by -Mr and Mrs Crimniihs, preparatory to an inspection of Mr Crimmins’ Leafield herd l of Jerseys. At the conclusion of a most enjoyable and delicious meal Mr Hoffman, president of the club, on behalf of those present thanked tire; hostess for her kindness and hospitality.
Leaving the ladies seated ip comfort bn the pleasant verandah, the representatives of the club commenced a tour of Mr Crimmins’ property and an inspection of hi.s Jersey Cattle. To facilitate the latter Mr Crimmins had brought the stock close in.
First, Mr Crimmins showed and explained to an interested audience his milking bails and his method of. feeding calves. In the, home paddock were viewed some fine yearling bulls and bull c.alves. Two—Deep Set Sun, by Waipiko Max from Rose of Lancaster, and! Charm’s Fairy, also by Waipiko Max— elicited admiration, as also did a. good two-year-old by Rower’s Beautiful Prince—Llaefngprry, which showed great promise and splendid carriage. Unstinted praise was givejn Waipiko Max, the senior herd sire, a wplndcr’ful bull of. outstanding constitution and girth, whose progeny have become a by-word. Marshlands Eminent, a ■two-year-old daughter of this sire, has produced 7121 b of butter-fat. Mr Crimmins is fortunate in having 20 good heifers, by .this bull, and from the first six two-yepr-old testing? he had over 481 b of fat for one month. Going over to the herd, the first c.ow to be inspected was. Aitoondy, a beautiful yellow fawn cow, with a pr<*ducti'on of 811 b of fat for November. Following on were several Lakeside Eminent heifers in milk which were very favourably commented on by of the club.
An His Imperial Majesty cow, the last of that line in Mr Crimmins’ herd, figured a .typical His Majesty’s head and body. My Desire, a wonderful old foundation animal, showed large rib development and stood a typical Jersey breeding, c.ow. Going further, a mature c.ow, by Cashmire Knight—My Desire, carrying a well-shaped vessel, was viewed; as well as one by V-C--s.hdwing a splendid top line and the appearance; of being a real worker. Next came a Brighten Twylish cbw, handsome, but running short from hip to pin bone. A Waipiko General caw, a real old-fashioned Jersey, short legged and deep-set, with a splendid vessel, illustrated the oldest, mepnber of three generations present, her daughter being a line-bred cow to Waipiko General, and her granddaughter a cow by Brighton Twylish. Another Waipiko General proved to be an ideal type of Jersey, with wellsprung ribs, deep c,hest, and splendid constitution. A daughter of, Waipiko Max’s inspected gives 601 b of fat a month. A floe cow by V-C. out of V.C. dam had milked herself right down, but was showing splendid, working condition. One •of the late; Mr Walters’ breeding, a Maid’s Egyptian General cow, which was viewed, was having a spell, but was due to calve shortly. She showed rather much condition;
Passing on to j&arling heifers, a feature noted was added development and type. This seasbn’s calves excited much favourable comment, one by Waipiko Max being specially picked for the show ring later on. Mr, Crimmins’ is line-bredi to those two great imparted bulls V.C. and Emminent Fontaine, bulls which have done great work for the benefit of New Zealand,
Mr Crimmins’ herd totals 105 head, glazing on 140 acres of splendid rolling, well-tended land, through which a str,earn runs ; besides which Water is laid eln in pipes. Well fenced and laid cut, it gave all the judications of what pastures should he;/; At the conclusion of the Inspection Mr Crimmins was the recipient of many felicitations remarks upon the quality and appearance of, his herd and his landL . MR. MUIR’S FARMAftei; reiterating their thanks to Mr Crimmins and the hostess for the worthwhile and enjoyable time spent, the party continued their journey to Mr W. Muir/s property on the Waihi Plains to inspect his Goldfields herd, a herd founded on, and mostly bred from, Mr G. Buchanan’s line. Tip Top, an outstanding dairy bull by Charm’s .Lor,d —Silverine, was the first beast viewed, earning unstinted praise in the r-rpteess. In the calf paddock was a beautiful even line of calves, by Tip Top and Regent, out-' ( standing features being 'their evenness and constitution.
Of c,ows inspected, a black Prince Edward heifer by Tip Top was very typey all over. The pick of. the bunch was easily a broken-coloured King’s Favourite cow, a Wonderful, dairy cow and an exceedingly high tester, comments by experienced; judges being that she would win in any show-ring anywhere. Another Prine,e Edward cow, silver fawn in colour, with a large, frame and broad muzzle, was a. great producer and one of Mr Muir’s foundation cows. T.hreje heifers iu milk, by Kelvin Prince, who. was by His Imperial Majesty—Princess Daisy, showed they were worthy of their ancestry. The next seen, a flfteenmonths. heifer in milk, and by an Orange Dale bull, proved an ideal dairy cow in miniature. A grand foundation cow, by Will-o’-the-Wisp, was inspected, a class of cow fit to breed, a herd' from, 12 years old, sound as a bell, and still going strong; Goldfields Doreen, a very compact little animal, and a worker, was favourably commented upon. Another foundation cow, by Charm’s Lord 1 , still remained in the herd, and although 14 year old was still sound in every way.
Going over to \hc young stock, a showy two-year-old by Silver King was gone over, followed by a yearling bull of a Clarion strain, showing a wonderful strain, and two yearling heifers which were a picture to behold; A bull calf much admired was one by Tip Top having three strains of Charm’s Lord, a likely looking youngster fit. to grace any herd. As with Mr Crimmins’, Mr Muir’s herd and his well-fenced and hedged land .were commented on in eulogistic terms, the cattle making a very fine showing indeed. One special point noted by all was their extreme tameness, every beast evidently being, tieated as a Pet. One c.o.w came charging the onlookers as if on trouble bent, but on reaching them she merely lowered her head to be tickled!
A walk thr'ouh the home paddock brought the party to Mr Muir’s house, where the ladies had been left in Mrs Walter Muir’s entertaining care. After the hostess, had refreshed the Party with daintily s.erved tea, hearty thanks were tendered to Mr Muir and Mrs Walter Muir, and Mr Muir, was warmly congratulated bn his herd and farm, -which, as he occupied it 16 years ago, was one of. the first to. be opened up on the Waihi Plains. Before separating at the end l of a most pleasant and. instructive d.ay, graced by perfect weather, it was decided that the next club run would he Held an March 21, with Messrs Hall and Hoffman’s property, at Matatoki, the venue.
