THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1929. 30 YEARS AGO AND TO-MORROW.

On another page will be found extracts from the “Gazette” of thirty years ago. It will be seen that the Thames-paeroa railway yvas just in the process c£ building and a great future success prophesied the line; a success that has been more than amply proved by the results of succeeding years. Turning from thirty years ago to the present, interest is centred on the railway, pr'omisejd in 1919, from Paeroa to Pokeno. No doubts from any quarter, are entertained' as to the ultimate success of this route, whether from the point of view of passengers or goods. The delay in construction has caused gj-eat hardship and, indirectly, not a little financial loss to those settlers :, most interested, and to many others as well. It is sincerely to be hoped! that to-morrow, in so ; far, as this line is. concerned, will soon give plau.e to a day of actual commencement, and the sodner that day arrivejs the better;

The extracts from .1898 about mining, and the health won from the ground in those days, make one think with gratification that ,we are promised a renewal of activity in this direction, not by the old methods, but by the scientific treatment of quartz two foreign companies intend to introduce in the Thames district/ an enterprise that* cannot but help react to some extent in favour of Paer.oa. Paeroa, too, is promised an interest in the proposed phosphate works which are to be erected on a huge scale, and, nearer, at harid, a great flax undertaking, where rope, sacks, etc,, will be manufactured right on the spot. Ta-morrow for Paeroa would appear to be fast approaching as a time of splendid industrial activity, with a resulting increase in the town’s population, prosperity, and wealth.
