OPERATIONS DURING JANUARY. OHINEMURI ENGINEER’S REPORT. •Mr L. E. Shaw, acting engineer for the Ohinemuri County Council, report to yesterday’s meeting of the council on the work carried out during .the month as follows: — WAIHI RIDING. “The; workmen’s time in this riding, has been given chiefly to re-forming and' widening portions of the WaihiWaitawheta road in readiness for metalling. About twenty chains of formatidn on -the Waitawheta end be;ing on private property, it has been necessary to form same on the legal road. -

• “Two, lengths of the formation on Tierney’s Road are; al sol ready for metalling. Proposals have been sent forward for the metalling of both the above-mentioned lengths of road- Authority for expending the money on Tierney’s Road has come to hand and the contract let to Mr H. Ashby, of Waihi.

“In answer to Mr Leopold’s letter asking for metal fefr repairs to his r,oa.d, I wish to state that I have inspected same and find that with about 100‘ cubic yards of. metal this road can be put in good order. Mr Leopold a,nd Mr Morton, the settlers concern-, ed, have offered te supply and deliver on the; road the required amount of material at 2s 6d. per cubic yard, a total cost of £l2 10s. WAIKINO RIDINGI

“All metal roads are receiving attention and are now. showing the benefit of increased maintenance) The new deviation to Waitawheta built by the Public Works Department is now complete, and is to be; handed! over to the counci) at an early date. I have inspected this formation and have nd faujt to find with it. WAITEKAURI RIDING.

“The main Waitekauri road in the roughest placets has had surfacing metal placed on it. Approximately 30 chains remains to be done to complete this whrk, and this will he gone on with directly the trucks are availably. ' • MANGAIT I RI DING. “The contractor on the Snakey Bend deviation has made good progress during the last month, and the work Is nearing completion, only the trimming of the formation repnaining to be done. PAEROA RIDING. “Maintenance as usual ha® been carried out. patching metal" has been placed o,n the Rotokohu road, and several bridges have been ed to. The bridge over the main road dr ; ain at Ryajl’s road was in such a bad state that it was found necessary to replace same. KAIMANAWA RIDING. , “The Marototo mine road from Mcr Brinn’s creek to thq mine has beenrepaired and made ready for gravelling. Proposals have been prepared for, the metalling of 42 chains of this length. A woodqn bridge on the Settlement Road has been replaced with 2ft concrete pipes,, and a wooden culvqrt has also been replaced with pipes.

“Thq widening and deepening of the drain at the lower end of Ferry Road has bepn carried out feir a distance of 8% 'chains. MAIN HIGHWAYS.

“Owing to the increased amount of traffic, over these roads during the holiday season, a large amount of sur- 1 facing will require to be done. Thq tractor and grader have been working most of thq time,, but owing tq the wheels of. the grader requiring repays the grading is hqld up. PAEROA WATER SUPPLY.

‘ The contractor, Mr W. H. Taylor,, has 1 made good progress during the last month, the concrete dam being, nearly complete.”
