NGATEA BRIDGE MISHAP.

FRACTURE OF HOISTING SHAFT. The breaking of a 4Finch shaft on the Ngatea bridge 'hoisting gear at 3 o’clock this morning, when the bridge was open for the passage of a scow, prevented the bridge befng closed until 8.45 a.m.

The fracture occurred near the pulley which carries the down-stream counterweight. Under thq supervision of the county engineer this counter-weight .was detached and the bridge lowered. Ho,wever. whqn about two feet above the cjosed position a number of cogs on one Of the hoisting winches stripped, and the’ lifting span fell. One sidq dropped to the normal closed position, but the other side, w'hic,h was held by the other weight, remained raised twq fleet. By the aid of timber-jacks the girders were twisted back almost, to normal position.
