AWAITI DRAINAGE.
gl AGREEMENT WITH ELSTOW BOAHD TERRACE DRAIN CONSTRUCTION. Matters of interest to this end. of the Elstow Drainage District were dealt with at a meeting of the trustees held at Te Aroha on Saturday last. There were present Messrs. W. J. Andrews (chairman), Carter, A. Davejy. W. W. Dunn, M. H. Wynyard, and G* H. Priest. Mr Carter, reporting oji the adjustment of boundaries at his end of the distiict so as t>q meet the position that had arisen with regard to Mr Fisher’s rb land, said that nothing final had been r reached yet.—The matter was left in the hinds -of Messrs. Carter, and Wynyard. The Chief Drainage Engineer, writing with regard to the Elstow-Awaiti agreement, stated that it was desired to uplift the £5OOO appearing on the current appropriations, .and pay it to the credit, of the Haur. <ki Plains Settlement Account before the end of the present financial year. It would be necessary for the Elstow Board to ' furnish a special authority ett’der. The £5OOO was payable by the board on A March 31, 1929. W Mr Wynyard l said he had seen the hejad of the departinent in Wellington and an attempt would be made to get the money from the State Advances Department. He wanted to see what they c.ould db there; before going to Jr other sources. The question of interest .was important. The original arrangement was £5 12s 6d per cent., and if they had to pay 6 per* cent, it would make a. big difference. They might be able to get the monej r at 5% per cent. The cost of the scheme had been from £30,000 to £22,000, and what .the board wanted at the present time was £17,000. One drainage board was; raising £BOOO through the Bank of New Zealand at 5Va P er A cent. The; subject was referred to Mr Wynyard-, who wo.uld report at the next meeting. r TERRACE DRAIN. The Net.herton Drainage Board telegraphed that it had decided to ask the Lands Department to proceed with the construction of the Terrace drain. , It was deeded, on the motiibn of Mr Wynyard, to write to the Chief Drainage Engineer as fellows :—< “We note that the Netherton Drainage Board has communicated with you requiring you to construct the Terrace drain to the intercepting canal, having declined to consent to c -ur board’s request to leave the outlet through the H drain. It is therefore apparent that the latter alternative referred to in section- 7 of the board s agreement with you is not possible, and we assume that you will at once proceed with th® con’structi-qn of the Terrace drain under that section. The point will arise as to the future .maintenance of this drain, as, between . the two boards, and wq would like 1 now -to state we consider, that when the time arrives maintenance be allocated between the two bejards on. the basis, of the; area of land in each ; board’s district the water, from which Mjg is taken by thia double drain. We raise the matter now 1 s ° that the board’s views on the same may be recorded and the basis of allocation of future maintenance be defined. We consider also that only the lands draining at the present time into Crosby’s drain-, which will be diverted to the new. Terrace drain, will continue to drain into the same, and that no lauds not now cqnnqeted therewith shall be connected with-the same in future.”
