The long list of drowning fatalities this summer following upon previous sad annual records has brought forth from numerous sources the proposal that swimming; should be taught in pur schools. With the improved facilities, now offering throughout the country this most important question might well be gone into and made a compulsory subject ‘ in the curriculum of all schools. Failing concerted action, it is a matter that, can be taken up by schools and schoolteachers individually, as the whole-hearted support of the mahy swimming clubs can be surely relied upon to give them every assistance possible. The local baths are free to schoolchildren accompanied by their teacher on .stated times. The custodian of the baths, and members of the Amateur Swimming Club, will teach the youngsters how to swim, free. The, opportuinty is available, and only needs acceptance. To be able to swim is so vital an asset that every advantage should be taken of •the instruction offering. Schoolteachers might well take their pupils, and parents their children, to th'CJ swimming gala to be held here on February 14. Actual interest and desire to swim will be evinced by them, desire that no- amount of talking bring about. To the individual t.h£ ability to swim may be at any timq a matter of life and death. Give the children every chance and encouragement to learn an accomplishment that should be included in every child’s training.
