NEW BRIGHTON AWAKES
PROGRESSIVE LEAGUE FORMED. POPULARISING KAIAUA. With the object of furthering the interests of. the Kaiaua (New Brighton) district, a well-attended meeting of residents was held last weejc when a progressive league wak formed. Mr G. H. Stubby presided. Representatives werq present from the Kaiaua, Mangatangi, Mir.anda, Whakatiwai and Wharekawa districts in large numbers. iMr A. W. Hall, M.P. for Hauraki, .was also in attendance. Reference was made to the growing popularity of. Kaiaua as a marine; res.ort, and the meeting was unanimous that steps should be taken- to popularise it to a greater extent. Accordingly a progressive league was formed.
The following were elected as a committee: Messrs, Graham, Finlay, E. Dane, A. Norton, R. Workman, W. C. England, G. H. Stubbs, F. Lowry, T. Williams, and Wana Waata. Mr England was electcjd secretary. The Franklin .County Council is to be communicated with requesting it to vest the Kaiaua Domain in local board, the personnel pif which iij to be approved at a later date. The existence of a seaside resort near Christchurch bearing the same name (New- .Brighten) was referred to by several '.speakers, who suggested that it should be altered to North Brighton. In an. ensuing discussion it was pointed out that the name of New Brighton had been given to thq district half a century ago, and that if people would only addres.s letters to Kaiaua nd difficulty would be experienced. The league recognised the necessity of erecting a hall to cater for social life during the camping season, and tentative proposals were; made as to methods,. for financing the building. Finally it was agreed to refer the matter to the committee to obtain aditional information.
Considerable discussion was given the sjubjec.t of impreiving the Wai-takaruru-Orere Road, which skirts the foreshore of the Hauraki Gulf and. passes through the Hauraki Plains, Waikato, Franklin, and Manakau counties. The Kaiaua district, it .was stated, was the converging point of the four counties, and was riot wellsqrvecf a's; far, as rpiads were concerned. Surprise was expressedi chat the Hauraki Plains, County Council bad for some reason unknown failed to lift a Government grant of £5OO for improving the Waitakaruru Road to the Waikato boundary.
Mr Hall assured the league that he would use every endeavour, to assist it. The Minister of Public. Works, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, had signified his intention, of visiting the Hauraki electorate toward the end of February and hq (Mr Hall) would induce him to inspect the Kaiaua district. He asked! the residents to have deputations in readiness to meet the Minister and also thq Minister, of Lands, the Hon. G. W. Forbes, who, it was expected, would be accompanying Mr Ransom. Mr Hall stated that he was aware that- the Manukau County Council was anxious to link up Orere arid Kaiaua.
