CLERK ADMITS THEFT.

£250 INVOLVED.

COMMITTED TO SUPREME COURT.

A charge of stealing, Government moneys totalling £251 8s 6d was preferred against Charley James, formerly a clerk in the employ of the Public Works Department at Ohura, and since the New Year at Paeroa, who appeared on Friday before the, J’s.P. at Taumarunui.

Lloyd Green smith, accountant, said that on going through accused books he found a deficiency of £2'sl 8s 6d. Accused was responsible for recording and banking all the Government money paid to the Public Wlor.ks office at Ohura. Witness found that £4899 10s 3d should have been accounted for for railway tickets. The accounted for was £464:8 Is 9d, leaving a deficiency of £251 8s 6<l, for. which James failed to account. James apparently had issued receipts for sums less than he had actually received. Accused had made a statement admitting the offence, and in court intimated he was anxious that the whole matter be cleared up.

Accused was committed to the Supreme Court at Hamilton for sentence, bail being granted.
