LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A sudden cold snap yesterday broke the humid heat of the last few days. Cold, heavy rain was experienced over night a.t Paeroa, and frost was registered a few miles away at Netherton.
Subject to the completion of details and valid titles, the Waihi Gold Mining. Co. is to join in partnership with a. Malayan company in an important tin proposition.
The following Paeroa students were successful at the recent matriculation examinations : Jessie C. southby, Dorothy Towers, William H- Parry.
At a meeting of the Ha.wera Retailers’ Association on the 21st inst., reports handed in by members showed that ovejr 85 per cent, of the retailers of the town were in. favour of retaining the mid-week half-holiday. .
That the Paeroa ■ borough roads were as good as any over, which he had passed in any town during his recent visit to Taranaki was the opinion expressed by iCr. Flatt yesterday. As for county roads, he had to wait until his return to Ohinemuri. County to be bumped.
Amongst other subjects of. importance to be discussed at the meeting, of the Auckland branch of the N.Z. Institute of County Clerks is that of. “Local Elections and Polls,” upon which a paper is to be read by one of the members.
At the Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Messrs Flatt and HMills, j’s.P., judgment with costs was given by default in the following cases: s Brenan and Co. v. E. J. Boraird, £3, costs £1 5s 6d ; same v. A. Gooding, £3 8s 6d, costs £1 4s 6d; R. I. Wells v. L. McNeil, £8 2s B'd, c.osts £1 4s 6d.
Paeroa, in common with, the rest of the; world, joins in the interest displayed in the Salvation Army during the present critical period through which it is passing. The Paeroa, Waim, and Tauranga railway employees are; to hold a picnic at Omokoroa, eight miles this side of Tauranga, on Sunday, January 27. Sports for men, ladies, and children will be held, trophies for which have been generously contributed by the business men of Tauranga, Waihi, and Paer.oa. A special picnic train leaves Paeroa at 8.30 a.m., departing for P.aeroa on the return jpiumey at 6 p.m. Me|tnbers of the general public. who desir,e to travel to the picnic by the special train may do so on purchasing tickets, which will be available at reduced. rates at the stations. The. Waihi Brass Band will be in attendance, and hot milk, soft drinks, and ice cream provided fr.ee of c.harge. Owing to the excellence of .the arrangements and the idfejal situation chosen, a most enjoyable day’s outing is to be expected.
As requests are constantly bejng received concerning the probable diate of the opening for selection of the Kerepeejhi block, the matter was referred by us to the lands drainage eivgineer at Kerepeehi. Mr Taylor stated that the; aim of the department wais to adequately protect the area before settlement, and this wor.k was now proceeding, A dredge was erecting a stop-bank on the southern; side, and a second dredge would be sent to the Awaiti side as soon as it completed what it was doing at Ngatea. It was unlikely that the block would be opened in time for the next milking season.
On Tuesday night last about fifteen members of the Paeroa Amateur Swimming Club went to Morrinsville to take part in the swimming carnival held by the MOrrinswille club- 'The only successful s.wimnaer was Masjter Jim Silcock, who seciured a second in. the 331-3 boys’ handicap. In the clubs’ relay race of 133 1-3 yarefe the Paeroa club, represented! by McDonald, Watson, and Denize, secured fourth place. The carnival was attended by over 400 people, who were keenly interested in the ejvents. The high diving for both the men and latjies was exceedingly gopkl, and brought forth rounds of applause from fhe spectators. The interhouse relay race caused a good deal of. excitement and resulted ha a clbse finish.
The Hauraki Plains Cricket Association’s competition will conclude to-morrow, when tht; matches commenced on Saturday last will be continued. If Ngatea on itsi own gtjpiundl can make 52 more runs than, can Kopuarahi it will win the competition, but if Ngatea fails to win and Waitakarunii succeeds in registering a threje-point win at Kaihcr.e a ’.play-off will be necessary. Orong'o will play at Pipiroa.
