TRAFFIC IN SYDNEY.
185,000 PEOPLE A DAY.
TRAFFIC AT CENTRAL STATION.
A census of traffic, in and out of Sydney, taken by officials of the Railway Department, shows that 185,000 people pass through the Central Railway Station each day (says a Sydney paper,).
The next largest traffig movement is that at Circular Quay, where almost 80,00'0 people go through the barriers daily.
The report in which this census is embodied points out that the provision of road transport between North Sydney and Sydney, by means of the harbour bridge, will cut out the two ferry servic.es from the three wharves in Lavender Bay.
“ One, the Milson’s Point service,” it proceeds, “ averages 35,000 passengers to the Quay daily, and of these 22,000 are brought by train to Milson’s Point station, 5000 arq brought by train, 30'00 by motor bus, and about 5000 are pedestrians. WHEN BRIDGE IS' READY. “ When the bridge is opened this service will be eliminated, as obviously there will be; no passengers offering for transport from that point.” The report states that from Lavender Bay, McMahan’s Point, a total of 10,500 people enter Sydney each day. “Her.e again,” continues, the report, “thq rearrangement of the new stations at North Sydney, with the trams giving access to .the one station, will result in. there being no business available for ferry servic.es.
“It is, therefore, cer.tain that the completion pif the brid'gje and railway across the harbour will remove 45,000 people from the traffic stream hue going through the Quay and .transfer them to the railway. “The total for all other services to the Quay is 35,000', and of thes£ quite a number will adopt the quicker and cheaper means of transport by the connected tram and train services, rather than adhere to the more expensive and longer-time journeys by bus, train, or fer.ry.”
