PAEROA-WAIHI ROAD.
The deplorable state of the Waihi road has been the subject of much adverse comment not only on tl>c part Of the long-suffering local population, but touring motorists as well. It can now be regarded as the main highway from Auckland to Tauranga, yet east of Paeroa has fallen into
such a state of disrepair as to be relegated to the category of a fourthclass road. Desultory efforts at repair have been* going on for some months now, but they are futile in their paltryness, and an absolute waste of time and money. A few bits of loose metal here and there filling up a depression in a boulder are not a repair, but an outstanding dagger, inviting a car to skid and get out of control. Four inches of metal on a rock surface is throwing good metal away. For some time lack of proper metal was put forward as a gagging, excuse for non-execution of legitimate urgently necessary work, but now that the crushing, plant at Mackaytown is successfully dredging stone from the Ohinemuri River there remains no defence for the reprehensive delay. No doubt the work has been held back a little through a series of unfortunate and unexpected mishaps to the crushing plant in its experimental stage, but from now on no more breakdowns are anticipated, and with the pla.nt working to capacity no excuse on that s.c'Pire will be available, and the repairing bf the road should be undertaken in a proper businesslike manner and t,he work rushed on to complete a road, worthy of being called the highway from Auckland to Tauranga.
