THE LURE OF GOLD.
OLD THAMESITES TAKE UP CLAIM AREA NEAR THE WAIOTAHL That he intended to seek for a lit-; tie of the old- time gold was the reason given to. a “Telegraph” representative by a former resident of Vvaihi, Mr John Newdick, who has taken up a piece of. ground, comprising about 20 acres, within half a mile of the one-time; famous Waiotahi claim at Thames. For the past 40 years this particular area, looked on with favour by old-timers, has been locked) up, and was only quite recently thrown off and automatically made available fo r prospecting. One day last week one of the very early pioneers of the Thames goldfield, in the person of Mr Alfred Newdick, father of Mr J. Newdick, and Mr Jack also an old-time miner and bandsman of Waihi in the early days of the town, accompanied by Mr Newdick, paid a visit of inspection to the claim. ■Mr Newdick, senr., who is in his 84th . year, and! Mr George, who is ten younger, traversed a considerable area of ground with which in their youngjer days they were more; or less familiar, and from past experiences were able to impart some useful information in connection with the; work which will be undertaken n the property. The claim, which will be known as the Luxall, is regarded as a distinctly promising piece of ground, and the first step will be to put in a drive about 200 ‘feet, "just to see,” as Mr Newdick, junr., said, “if we can got a little of the old-time gold.”
