AMBERGRIS.
DEI’OSiITS IN THE SOUTH. SOME VALUABLE FINDS. Some fossickerg on the beaches of Stewart island, New Zealand, derive quite a respectable living from finds of ambergris, with an occasional piece Of luck in getting a lump that runs into three, or perhaps four, figures. ■Along the benches bn the mainland of the southern c,oast of New Zealand the valuable commodity is alsjo found 1 , as the sperm whale has its! feedinggrounds in the vicinity. During the past few years ambergris to the value ■of some £3060 has .been found'. One big lump secured! by a party was worth £l4OO. Authorities in the so.uth are not in agreement with the scientists’ explanation of ambergris. From observation they declare that it is, the excrement of the sp'ejrin ,whale and not the vomit, and they join issue with the opinion that Only one whale in a thousand secretes ambergris. The amount and the various grades washed up on these beaches refutes that idea. /
