Mr H. B. Smith, of Hikutaia, met with a painful accident yesterday horning, when a finger on his left hand was crushed in a hay-,sweep. The finger was burst open up one silde. Mr Smith' was brought to Paeroa and received qurgical treatment.

An unfortunate occurrence, which resulted in the loss of practically all the furniture of Mr v and Mrs G. Lindsay, Patetoyiga, occurred during the holidays. Mr Lindsay recently purchase;d a farm at Waitakar.ur.u, and was shifting the household effects by Mr N. K. Evans’ lorry. A short distance from Patetonga, the vehicle ran over a bank, caught fire, and l was completely destroyed, together with all the furniture and clothing. Mr Lindsay’s belongings had been insured at Patetonga for £3OO.

A two-year-old boy, Ronald Millqr, met his death in unusual circumstances at Cessnock, 136 miles north of Sydney. With his brother, Cedric ■he was having a bath when he touc,h-, ed a water tap, which came into contact with a leak in the eleptric installation. He was, killed instantly. Cedric also received a shock.

A start was made yesterday with th<" work of piping th© drain on the Ngatea Public Hall Society’s frontage. The completion of this work and the widening of the road through Ngatea township will be a great improvement.

It is claimedi that the increase throughout the district is ten per cent., even after maiding due allowances where necessary, but it is probable that five per. cent, is nearer the mark. Whatever, it is, the suppliers to. the cheese factory are satisfied, and an effect has been that nu-; merous others have intimated their intention of supplying next season. At present the factory is booked up to capacity for. next s;eason.

The custodian of the, baths notifies that swimming will be taught at the baths. For those who desire, private lessons will be given. Schoolchilldren willl be taught free of charge.
