A GAMBLE.

MiUUUAGB BBFOBB THIBOT.

bugbnb BRIBUX’S theory.

“How many players break the bank at Monte Carlo ? Well, exactly that number win in the game of marriage when they gamble before they are; thirty.” This, is the “don’t” of M. Eugene Brieux, the veteran French dramatist, to those contemplating early marriage.

“Young people are marrying in droves to-day, and reaping the whirlwind,” declares M. Brieux (author o£ “Damaged Goods”). “The moment they find themselves enamoured they rush to the register office. ‘Lafe in short, divorce is easy,* they say, ‘let’s go.’

“These youths, still floundering from job to job, or out of .economic fejar settling into a rut of a career for which they are not equipped, goon discover that divorce is difficult and that a wife chosen in haste may be an impediment.

“Home life bejcbmes a succession of and bickerings. A child, which might be a solace, cannot be thought ,of because of lack of mopey. Jealousy assumes ah espe«iali ly sordid form, for the girl watches her husband with a sharpness which does not help towards smooth sailing.

“Nbw and again one of thesq marriages turns out well, and then it is, a poem, ;an idyll. It is one in a thousand. Yet upon the basis of these ‘long shots’ striplings by the hundred continue to gamble their lives.”
