A BOY’S SUCCESS.
“CRAMMING UP” DEPRECATED. FINAL SCHOOL YEAR SPOILT. “I wish to say a word abo,ut matriculation and other examinations,” saijl Miss, Batham, principal of the Wellington East Girls’ College, when mentioning at the prize-giving ceremony that twenty-one pupils had gainqd full passes. “I would urge parents not to lay such great stress on their girls passing matriculation, unless it is thqir intentioni to conr| tinue their study at the university. The last year of school bf many girls is spoilt by trying to ‘eram up’ for this examination—one which from either, their ability, or perhaps from temperament—they are never likely to pass. Very few girls entered for the Public Service examination; eight passed. Girls are given no encouragement by the Government to enter for this examination. The certificate is useful as a standard for girls taking office work. For years, I think it is seven, no girl has been placed on the permanent staff of the Public Service in the clerical division. The best that girls can get is a 'temporary position as office-assistant at 255. a week—with a chance of getting 30s. after 12 months’ work. From what I kribw of some girls of our, own school, who hold these temporary positions, I gather that not even the low standard of Public Service examinar tion isj required.” The late Minister for Education (Mr R. A. Wright, M.P.), ini his speech, endorsed Miss Batham’s remarks regarding the matriculation examination.
