DISTRICT HEWS.

WAITAKARURU. SCHOOL SPORTS. The Waitakaruru district school held its thirteenth annual Christmas holiday picnic yesterday in the schoolgrounds. When the children and their parents had assembled, Mr, C. Harris, caairman of the committee, in addressing them referred to the illness of the King and asked that the first care be the .singing of the prayer for the health of the Sovereign. After, the Anthejn had been sung prizes were distributed to all the children present; and the special prize donated by Mr. W. Stretton for general efficiency was presented to Master Gordon Beaver. Mr Harris announced that at the proficiency examination held at Ngatea the previous day four Waitakaruru scholars had passed, two had' sec.ur.ed competency, and one had failed. Lunch was provided by the wives of the members of the school c.ommit; tee and their friends, and the twohour programme of sports was commenced. Then followed a lolly scramble and afternoon tea.

Relay Race : Boys 1, Girls 2. Boys’ threelegged race: JovVsjey and Bennett 1. French and Hudson 2. Girls threelegged race,: L. Harris and I- Tre thowen 1, L. Hudson and C. Wilson 2.
