WORKS IN THE COUNTY.
PROGRESS DURING MONTH. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Hauraki Plains Cqunty Engineer, Mr F. Basham, reported to last Thursday’s meeting, of the council on the work canned out 'during the month as follows: — MAIN HIGHWAYS. “The grader has been kept constantly in use and roads have been maintained in fair order. The bitumen portion of the Orpngo-Netherton highway has been repaired throughout its whole length, and is now in good condition.” Cr. Reid pointed out that on ac,co.unt of the corrugation in the surface of Wilson’s Rqad much of the heavy traffic was using the old) road. He asked if anything co.uld be done, as the qld main road was suffering and repairs were not subsidised! by the Main Highways Board. On Cr. Reidfs motion the inspector, was instructed to, investigate the matter. The engineer said that he was investigating planing machines, which might be more efficient than graders. The time was coming when the coun-, cil would have to consider the purchase of a light motor grader. He wquld defer, the matter until the next financial year. GOVERNMENT GRANTS. “Approval and authority has been received for all proposals for metalling submitted to the Public Works Department, with the exception of that for. the Kaihere rqad between tiie Ngarua bridge and the Waitaka-ruru-Morrinsville road. Tgiis is still under discussion, and I am accom-; panying the Public Works Engineer next week to prospect fqr possible supplies of metal or gravel. LOANS. “Ngatea Riding.—Work has commenced qn Puhanga Canal East Road, and good progress was being made with the metalling until the rain interrupted the work, “Ngataipua East Road. —About 2600 yards of metal have been stacked on the riverbank. The road has been graded in readiness for metalling, and the contractors will commence c,acting next week. Pekapeka Water Supply.—The small turbine pump has been installed and is now wqrking very satisfactorily, and a good supply of water is available.”
