CARELESS MOTORING.

COMPLAINTS AGAINST WOMEN.

ISSUE OF LOENSES TO CHILDREN

That the manner in which a great many people handle a motor-car does not justify their having been granted a license to drive one was suggested by Mr W. R. C. Oswin at a rec,ent meeting of the Wellington Automobile Club. Mr, Oswin said that there were many motorists, fyho, although holding a license, showed by their driving that they were not fit to drive a car. That applied particularly to women, many of whom should not have charge of a car f He thought something ought to be done by the club in pointing, the matter out to traffic department. Mr Oswin also referred to the issue cf licenses to boys or girls when they reached the age of 16 years, which h 6 thought was teb young. Mr H. J. Stott remarked that there had been a great deal of opposition to any suggestion that the age-limit should be lowered. He also thought that the test given by the city traffic department before a license was granted! was fairly severe. He did say, however, that the wqmen drivers had, no knowledge of the courtesies of the road or of the traffic regulations. Mr A. J. Curtis remarkde that if a license could not be secured in Wellingtqn an applicant had only to cross over the hill to Featherston and get one there.

“I think Mr. Oswin’s remarks apply not only to women, but to a great many drivers of the male sex,” said Mr A. L. Warburton.

Mr E. A. Batt: Women drivers are not a bit more careless than a great many men. I think that a great many who do drive cars have not got the temperament to drive; but it is hopeless to try and remedy such a position by legislation. It is quite futile to do anything. The dub decided to approach the eity traffic authorities in regard to slack driving in the streets, ajid also to suggest to it that it issue a pamphlet setting but the rules and etiquette of the rqad when issuing licenses.
