The primary schools will close fqr. the Christmas vacation on Wednesday, December 19, and will resume on February 4. This is the usual length cf the vacation.
During the last ten years Mr C- BGentil has covered no less than 1 miles on his bicycle, as recorded l by his cyclometer attached to the spoke of the front wheel of his bicycle. This distance has been covered between Paeroa and the abattoir, and shows an average qf approximately 6% miles per. day, excluding Sundays.
A motor accident occurred on the Puke bridge coi Wednesday afternoon. Mrs R. B. Dunlop, of Netherton, was erturning from the Show and’driving her car close behind a large van, which obscured the view of the driver of an approaching service car. The service car swung past the van, and to avoid a gollisicm. Mrs Dunlop ran her car to trfe side of the bridge, with the result that a front wheel was broken.
On Wednesday the secretary of the Show received a telegram from Mr E. 1 W. porritt, a past presidtent andl also a life member of the association, wishing the function every success. This is the first show for 17 years that Mr Porritt has nqt attended. A wire expressing good wishes was also received from Mr W. L. Lawrence, who has acted as a steward for the past six years.
The Railway Department is running a special week-end excursion train from Auckland to Tauranga this coming week-end. Single fare is being charged for return jourjiey. Particulars are advertised in this issue.
One booth at the Paeroa Show on Wednesday did n qt attract general attention, ,as it was located where it would be epnvenient to those whom it desired to interest, it was the Paeroa Jersey Breeders’ Club exhibit in the Rev. Lowden’s garage near the saleyards, where photc-graphs of Jer-i seys and records 'of the breed could be examined.
The Railway Department dra,ws at-, tentiqn in the advertising columns of this issue to a special advertisement in coni ection with the issue of holiday excursion tickets and the running of night passenger and extra express trains during the forthcoming Christmas and New Year holidays.
The Hauraki United Drainage Board at a special meeting on Monday evening dispenseed with the services of its clerk, Mr, T. D. Wallace, and appointed Mr J. E. Green, of Turua, as temporary clerk. The board’s books are now being investigated by the Government auditor.
One of the Auckland Autqmobile Association’s road patrOJmen was present at the Paeroa Show on Wednesday. H'Os ser.vic.es were available to those motqrists whose cars carried the A.A.A. badge, and doubelessly mapy car-owners who have benefited by -the work ’of the association took the opportunity to become members.
It was expected that a start would be made this week with the reconstruction of the main highway between the Puke bridge and Waihi, but it seems that when the contractors commenced crushing metal for the road the fouhfilatlons of the plant at Mac.kaytown .were found to be in an unsatisfactory state*. The strengthening qf the foundations will probably delay the start until after the Christmas vacation.
Cricket matches on the Plains tomorrow will be played at Kaihere against Ngatea, Kopuarahi against Pipiroa, and Waitakaruru against Oren go.
Mr F. R. Hqward, sight-testing specialist, representing Messrs Barry and Beale, Ltd., of 322 Queen Street, Auckland, will attend* at the Centenary Hall, Paeroa, on Tuesday, December 11, from 10 a.m. until 4.30 p.m*
