ACCLIMATISATION.
LOCAL CLUB MATTERS. SANCTUARY FOR OHINEMURI. In March last the Auckland Acclimatisation Society laid’ down a new policy of game liberation. It was decided to allqcate game birds Only to those branches which were able to secure blocks of suitable country of approximately 2000 acres in extent under conditions which would proclaim the areas as properly gazetted sanctuaries. The local club took this matter up sqme time ago, and the president, Mr J. Hamilton, and the secretary, Mr, D. Leach, aftef investigation and inquiry, have been successful in making arrangements to secure a block of country yffiich it is hoped will meet the requirements. The block consists of the pr.oper.ties of Endean’s Estate and the farms qf Messrs J. Brown, J. J. Barrett, D. Shephan, and Costello, containing, roughly, 2000 acres. The area is well sheltered, and should make an ideal sanctuary.
The chief ranger, Mr Routledge, inspected the block during the weekend under the guidance of Messrs Leach ajid Nevin, of the local club. He expressed his satisfaction with the block, and is prepared tq r,ecommend the proposal.
To-morj-ow night' a meeting of the council will take place at Thames. The president, secretary, and members qf the local club will attend and lay the matter before the council, which will no doubt give it favourable consideration. There is every reason to believe that at least 100 pheasants will be available for. distribution on thq proposed sanctuary, which will be definitely locked up fqr two years.
In view of the splendid results obtained at Karangahake, where pheasants are now plentiful, due; to the protection of the birds by residents and property owners, the local club is confident that a large increase in the number, of pheasants will bq brought abejut as a result ofHhe new nolicy. PARTRIDGES. Mr Leach applied for a small number. of paxtridg.es for rearing purposes, and has been informed'that these, will be forwarded at the end of November.
