THE PAEROA HOSPITAL.
THAMES BOARD’S PAYMENTS. CONSIDERATION POSTPONED. Paeroa hospital matters were discussed by the Thames Hospital Board at its monthly meeting on Monday afternopn. 1 The Director-General of Health wrote under date October 23 as follows :—
“It is regretted, that it should have been necessary to pnoc.eed with the Order-in-Council in regard to the Paeroa Hospital, but this has now been gazetted and I send yqu a copy thereof. The Public Works Department has been authorised: by the Minister to proceed with the r.e-advertising, of tenders, and I shall be glad, therefore, to. receive a reply to the final paragraph of my letter of August 1, which read: ‘As the progress payments become due I trust your bqard will honour the Public, Works certificate for the sum, and thus prevent the unpleasantness of further, steps having to be taken to recover the amount from your board. !• shall b» glad to hear that yqur board has agreed to meet these progress payments as thqy become due.’ Your letter of August I’s did not reply to this question.” Mr Hale said that he had had an interview with Mr W. Marshall, Mayor of Paeroa. Mr, Marshall ha,d arranged to wait on the board, but had later advised that he equid not attend the present meeting, He did not know what proposition the Mayor of Paeroa had to put forward, but the air was more or iels electrical at the present time-, and: he would suggest that the matter be held over for a month. He did not think this would conflict with the interests of the Public, Works Department; as the tenders would not close until Nchrember 20. The chairman moved, apd Mr Lange seconded, that the matter be held over.
Mr. Kennedy asked what the chairman meant by the statement that the air was electrical. He thought the department should be given a straight-out answer, aPld that the chairman was merely side-stepping. He understood) that, the Paeroa people had intended asking the board to drop Its opposition and let the matter proceed) smoothly. He could nqt see why the matter Was beinig held Up.
The chairman said the Mayor of, Paeroa had visited him the previous evening and had asked for permission to meet th,e.board. He did not know what Mr Marshall intended to put to the board. Mr Kennedy said that the chairman knew quite well what the PaerOp peoplg wanted. The department had started to move, and there was no reason, for holding the matter Up. He wanted a reason for deferring the matter another month. Perhaps it would be deferred for six months. The chairman repeatejd that his only desire was tq give Mr. Marshall a full opportunity of placing any matter before the board; The motion was carried.
