LIGHTING OF ROADS.
HAURAKI COUNTY CORNERS. MORE LIGHTS RECOMMENDED. " in accordance with instructions given at the previous meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council, the inspector, Mr W. White, reported to Thursday’s meeting of the council on the matter of the lighting of roads as follows:— “There appears to be a necessity for lights to be installed at the undermentioned places: Ngatea, near the bridge on River Road, approach-* ing Phillips’ fam ; Turua. at Orchard East Road corner, and the corner of Wharepoa Road (junction of main road); 'Waitakaruru, at Haley’s corner; Netherton, at the corner of Wilson’s Road, and on the road the factory (stop-bank endi); Kerepeehi. | one light at the stop-bank end of - Pqkapeka Road; Hqrahia, at the end of Piako Road, and also at Parry’s corner; Pipiroa, the lights established at Dalgety’s comer and the ferry appear to be sufficient; Kopuarahi, the corner at, the school and the one at the end of Orongo Road appear to require lighting; Pate tonga, no lights required.” Cr. Miller considered that lights were not needed in his riding. Cr. Madgwick argued that the mattqr should not be the coricem .of ridings, and the suggested lights would be of benefit to the whole of the county. A long discussion ensu-ejl on the question of whether the lights Should be charged to, the ridings or to the general fund of the county. j| The chairman sriid 'he could find no 1 authority for charging the liability to the general county fund, but was nothing to prevent the council deciding that lights be provided charged to the several ridings. Cr. Hicks moved that the inspector's recommendation be adopted. Cr. Harris seconded. Cr. Miller moved a.s an amendment that the lights in Kopuarahi riding be deleted from the list. Cr. Mayn seconded. Cr. Harris opposed the amendment, pointing 'out that it would not be fair to those ridings which provided lighting at bad corners on their highways. The council agreed that the lights were desirable and would be of benefit to others than those in the particular ridings. The amendment was defeated. As a further amendment Cr. Parfitt moved that the lights at the Pipiroa, ferry be charged to the ferry account and not to the Pipiroa and Kopuarahi ridings. Cr. Harris spoke in opposition, coptending that the position was simDar to that at other points: on the main highway, and the lights were just asnecessary. Cr. Miller supported Cr. Parfitt. The amendment was only supported by Crs. Parfitt, Madgwick, and Miller, and the motion was adopted. The inspector was instructed to ascertain the cqst from the Power Board and report to the council.
