WORKS IN THE COUNTY.

I'KOGIiESS DIKING OCTO DDB.

ENGINEER’S REPORT.

Mr E. Shaw, acting-engineer, submitted the following report on the work carried out during the month to yesteirday’s meeting, of the Ohinemuri Counjty Counc.il “Waihi Riding.—(Owing to th© weather conditions being sq unfavourable for carting on the clay roads during the past month very little has bepn done towards the completion. ,C|t the contract for metalling portion of Pukewera Road. The time has beejn given chiefly to general repaiis qver the whole; riding. “Maiiigaiti Riding.—-The workmen in this riding have been employed oh repairs to the main highway- The; 2ft pipes to replace the 12in culvert on the main Te Aroha road have been pla,c,ed in position. The; contractor has made a start on the Old. Te Arolia Road deviation, but the continued wet Weiather has been against his making, much headway.

“Kaimana.wa Riding.—The grading of roads, in this area has been; continued, and a quantity of metal supplied tc ; Settlement Road and Ferry Road; but ’on account.of the Maratoto cieek being too high to allow the motor truck to get to the gravel pits this carting has been suuspended, but will be continued at the first opportunity.

“With reference to the lettejr whipn will come before you to-day from the URder-Sepretary of the Mines Department, in which he suggests that a new crate be put across 'the Maratoto stream below the temporary ford, I (Jo not consider the idea a good one. The road at this point is only .a little above the stream level, and) in the event of flooding .the tendency would be for the cj*eqk to change its course down the road. The £6O offered by the .Mines Department wquld be advantageously spent higher up the stream, where it is intended: to make tliq permanent road, and J would suggest that the department be asked to allow this to be done. “Waikino Riding.—Very little work apart from, the water supply has been done in this riding. The dam and reservoir have been cleaned' out and a nejw grating installed at the dam. The placing of the new 6-inch pipes to repair the damaged portion of. the main is row with the exception of the portion over the trestles near, the dam, which was damaged by fire during last summer. It was thought at the time of estimating the cost of repairs that this portion c : f the main if given a c,oating of tar would stand .for some,' time, but with the, closing of all the breaks in the pipe-line the burnt pipes were found: to he leaking, and will, require to be replaced with six lengths of new pipe. If this is dqne; the supply will be in very satisfactory order. MAIN HIGHWAYS. “Paeroa-Kopu.—The, top-dressing qf this road has been delayed on; account of not being able to get into the gravel pits ; but in the meantime metal is being crushed at the Kqmata quarry for this purpose. “Hamilton-Paeroa.—This road is 511 fair order with the exception of the swamp portion from the Paeroa Borough boundary to Cadman Roail. This work will be put in hand .as soon as possible. Two bridges have been redecked. . PAEROA WATER SUPPLY. “During the month the Water Supply Committee visited; thq proposed hqadworks of the additional water supply from Green’s Creek, and of the two sites selected the Iqwer one has been decidejd.on. Plans and specifications of the new dajn have beep prepared, and. tenders for constructing same.will be called for this week, returnable on the 22nd instant.”
