SCHOOL SINGING COMPETITION. In 1920 a silver cup was presented by the Thames Naval Band, which is now the First Hauraki Regimental Band, for competition in.choir singjng among teams from various schools it the neighbourhood. The competition was held annually on Labour Day, under the auspices of the Thames Fire Brigade, and teams had tq comprise at least three boys and three girlsand not more than six of each sex. Five years ago the Turua school-won the c,up from the Thames Central school, with a team trained by Miss Darby,. No competition wap i held until last Labour Day, when the; Turua school was : notified- tq compete against the Thames -Central school. • After a fortnight’s practice . 'under the guidance of Miss R.-Hoffey,'-second assistant, a team comprising, with emergencies, the ifollqwing'childreni was sent toThames : Elsie-Johnson, Zelda Fisher, Gwen Zeigltir, Mqna Heberley, Alison Walker, Joyce Allen, Olwyn -Murray, Louvain Monkley, ■■ Tony SuttonCharles Goodwin, Alfred Stephens, Roy Henry, Harry Reid, and John Miss Nicholls was the--accompanist. However, on, account of . some of the, Thames team being absent no- competition was held, and after the-Turua children had given their selections
bi the Queen’s Theatre, the cup -was Uianded to the headmaster, Mr F. HM. Shepherd, by Superintendent Garrett, of the Fine Brigade.
