GOVERNMENT RATES. The clerk mentioned that as the ' ooanl had tajien over, control of. the Jfrurea from the Government, which had r levied its drainage rates, there wasi a less amqunt due to the Government. _ As it was unlikely that the Governt.W- luellt would make refunds, ratepayers s’ ’ would! be well advised to defer paying their Government drainiage rate£ until the, amount was amended, even though the 5 per cent rebate for prompt payment, was lost. M maintenance subsidy. Then there wa.s a grejat. deal of discussion on pumping, but it would 1 be realised that much pupiping. could not be afforded, and as much drainage by gravity as possible should! be secured. All this showed the, need for competent advicq on a comprehensive scheme. The board’s revenue would hot allow many pumps, but. if neees- ‘ - sayy the board could Subsidise pri-vately-owned pumps- In his opinion 'the present, drains would be sufficient for the drainage of the area when i thety were improved by widehing, and v deepening in certain placesMr A.
