For some years pa-:t the waiit of a pavilioai in the recreation ground has been much felt The matter has a|t various times been dir-cussed by o.ur Domain Board, but, for the want of funds it lias never been gone with. When the last loan; was carried to make improvements to the grounds it w.a|s thought by some members of the Domain Begird that there would be e.nough money ■to undertake*the woj’k, but owing to ,the heavy cost of levelling the playing areas and filling in the drain and the lagoon which then existed the whole of the mojney had to gp i ip that direction. During the winter mqnthSi when the football season is on. the want, of a pavilion has been keenly fqlt, and ma,ny people have preferred to stay away from the matches, not only because of there being no shelter, but. also on accojun.t of the dampness underfept. To, overcome the letter handicap the footballers have had at time,?.: to lay down “duck-boards.” Seats htijve also been c.ar.tecU onj to the fic.id, but. this was a very potjr apology for a grandstand, for while this expedient gave a limited few some comfort the great majority had to stand in the wet arid muddy field. A new ground just across the bridge, and recently acquired by the Borough Council, is spoken of as being a better playing area for football, but as yet the CQuncil has come to no decision as to what-use it will put this area. It is c.ertain that a. pajvilicjti would pay for itself, and for this assertion we have the gratifying results achieved by the Thames Rugby Union since opening its new ground and giving its patrons some measure of cqmfort. Not alonie lias the structure already paid fo.r itself in the amount collected for seating .accommodation, but, the attendances at matches have increased. The timber was financed by the club and the, stand was erected by voluntary labour. Concerning Paer.o ; a, we believe there are sufficient sports here t<j undertake the erection c.f a. pa'vili'on if the timber were secured. Not alone for football is a pavilion) required, as it would be- largely availed o.f at the gatherings of the Athletic Sports Club, Agricultural Show, cricket matches, and, in, fact, any gathering hehl in the domain. Visitors ,t’d Paero,a express surprise: that no pavilion exists, especially when they realise how centrally the town is situated for the holding of big representative football matches. It would certainly be an additional argument ’ .to advance when endeavouring to secure matches to be played at Paeroa. The groun.d i?i recognised as being a; good one, and well planned in regard to its, convenience to the town. Ho.wever, it is to be hoped that the Domain Board or. Borough Council will soon; make its decision as to which ground is to be the future football area, so that a pavilion can be erected for. our next year’s sports gatherings.
