THE TURUA CLUB. ANNUAL SOCIAL FUNCTION. The Tuiua Fcpt.ball Club held its annual social to wind up the season on Thursday evening, anid about 20*0 people, including ladies, sat down in, the Turua Hall to what wa.» almost a banquet. Four, long tablets artistically decorated with spring flqwers and paper streamers in the club colours — black and; white—and arranged by Mesdames J. H. Johnston and H. Hill, bore a sump.tuqusi supper provided 1 by a ladies’ committee comprising the following: Mesdames T. White, J. Hamilton, W. Taylor, F. Clotworthy, C. Scott, L. Henwood, B. Tynan, K. Fox, ajid Misses Clotworthy, Madgwick, and Gray. Mr T. White, president of the club, who, presided, explained that the function had been arranged by the sup-, porters of football to honour the teams which had: done-so well ip the Hauraki Plainjs Rugby Union’s competitions. A short toast-list was) hon]oured> the toasts being interspersed with items by a party of Thames entertainers, anil after justice had been done to. the supper the tables were cleared away and dancing was engaged in to.music by Mi’s Mules’ orchestra. The first toast, that. ,to the Hauraki Plains Rugby Union, was proposed by Mr G. Gray, who congratulated the unli’on on, the strides made in the short time it had been in existence. He pointed out that it was nc*w up to the union to endeavour to effect an improvement in the standard of play. In responding to the toast Mr H. Dent, presidepit of the union, said that in his opinion -the- best, way to improve the standard of play wquld be to reduce the number of teams, and encourage the lower grades. A sta.rt had been made in that direction last season, but there was still room for further advancement. The union had had a fairly strenuous year, and though at. times its had not met with universal approval the members had done as they thought best f' r ir the game. f The toast of the evening, that to the Turua Football Club, was proposed by Mr H. Dent, president of the Rugby Union, who congratulated the club on winning the knock-out, c’ompetiieju, ■cup a,nd the junior shield. Mr W. Taylor responded. “Kindred Sports” was proposed by Mr Ji Hamilton and responded to by •Messrs T. D. Wallace on behajf of the Tennis Club and by Mr. A‘. H. Sutton on. behalf of the Cricket Club. Mr F. H. M. Shepherd ably proposed a toast, to the Referees’ Association, and Messrs F. Clotworthy and B. Tynan responded. In proposing a toast to the donors of the cup nnd the shield Woin| this season by the Turua Club Mr P. RHenry commended the work of the president of the- Rugby Union, Mr H. Dent, who had donated a cup that even the All Blacks wquld be proud to play for. He also, complimented the Patetonga people, who many years agb donated a shield for the encouragement of junior players. “The Winning Teams” wa«- a toast proposed by Mr C. Scott, aujd t, he it wo trophies were then presented to the team captains, K. Fox and 1 F. Marshall, who duly responded. After the Dent Cup had been filled and handed rqund, the toast-list, was concluded with the appropriate honours to th© ladies. This toast, proposedl by Mr J. T. Davies, was responded to by Mrs K. Fc.x and Mr J. H. Jbhnston. The musical programme was provided by Messrs. W. J. Scrimgeour, pianist; L. Rqwe„ ventriloquist; L. White, whistler,; T. Verran, .and a couple of amusing skits-, yore presented by Messrs. Garland, Gollop', and Scrimgeour,
