DRAINAGE AT CARTER'S.
DISCUSSION BY HAURAKI BOARD. REQUEST TO MINISTER. The matter of improving the drainage of tliq area about. Carter’s corner and northward was discussed by the Hauraki United Drainage Board, at its meeting on Friday. In this connSC" tioji the Public Works Department had agreed to deepen Porritt’s drajn. instal an additional 4ft flood-gate W, the board provided £lso‘, being the estimated cost. The board agreed to find ten annual instalments of £lO, which offer was declined by the department. With reference to, the sum being found by .the settlers concerned, Mr R. H. Heappey attended the meeting and expressed the opinion that the set-, tiers did not favour finding the money for improving Porritt’s outlet. They contended that the work was rendered ucecssray entirely through the operations of the Public Works Department. They al-o considered that the depnrmc.nt’s drainage scheme was not the best for the locality, a,nd that the drain had numerous bends, which was bad. After the watea’ from the Waihou had ceased coming on to the land at Carter’s corner the department’s new drains had failed to deal with the flood on account of bad designing. Water coming in at right angles stopped the flow and diverted the current, with the result that all Carter’s land became flooded 1 . The department had spoilt the drainage of the district, declined to effect an improvement, and refused to do anything unless the district found the money. He would advocate that the Minister, of Public Works be invited to inspect the po&i-
tiejn. After the matter had been discussed the board agreed to write to Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., and the Minister of Public Works.
