THE Hauraki Plains Gazette. With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY & FRIDAY. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1928. PAEROA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

“Wiia.t has become, of our locaj Chamber of Commerce ?” is n.ot, infrequently asked. This body, which has done splendid work, met regularly until December, 1925, and from that date four meetings only have been corded, namely, in April ancl June 1926, April 1927, and February 1928, when the question, cf the half-iholiday for Paeroa was discussed. It would seem, therefore, that coinciding with the restoration of hotel licenses this once august body has lost, its pc>wer. of speech, or, in other words, .th®. Chamber, which in the days before, the advent of licenses was a body of considerable importance to Paeroa and district, has since tha.t time, apparently rested on its oars, and is seemingly dying of inanition. Surely the progress of the past, two years lias justified the taking of more heart by a body which, over, a long period of years of difficulty, lias fought such an uphill battle, it, is a. well-known fact that it takes more power tq get a still object moving tha.n to keep an, object that is already moving in motion. and this will surely apply to our Chamber if it once becojmes defunct. At the present time there ate quite a number of subjects that, the chamber* eo.uld with advantage deal with, which, if brought about, would forward tlie prosperity of the town and district. If ever there was a need for the activities of a live Chamber of Commerce, it is now. The publicity given by making kn,own the activities of the local chamber has the effect of enlarging the importance of Paeroa in th© eyes of other towns, awakening the interests of its own citizens, and bringing about the, establishment of business that would not otherwise come. The future progress of the town, isi in the hands of its inhabitants to-day. Progress, independence, and prosperity ate assured: for Paeroa if til© civic spirit and pride of the place can be maintained. Paeroa is well situated, and if the business people will only be. loyal to their own town, and' thus encourage: and set, tlie example for the public, then Paeroa arild *ts people must progress. Pride, loyalty, and a keenness to create and foster all the business that can be created in the town must be: included in the programme to, be taken up, and there is no body more competent to ileal with suoh matters as a Chamber of Commerce.
