HOPAI. ‘ TENNIS CLUB. Despite the fact that during last summer the Piako River as a swim-ming-place proved sq attractive to the people of Hopai that the tennis club experienced considerable difficulty in securing players to fulfil its engagements, .with the result that the keen tennis players were of opinion that the club should be disbanded, the annual meeting last Saturday evening was strongly in favour of carrying qn. The meeting had been called early so that in the even|t of the. club being wound up the . players could . join other clubs. At present it appears that six ladies and eig.ht men will be the play’ng strength. The full membership will comprise t'he general committee, and ithe officers will be practically the same as in previous years, as follows : president, Mr A. R. Vowles ; vice-president, Mr L. M. Murray ; secretary, Mr W. 'Murphy; match committee;, Messrs Vowles. Murray, and Murphy ; delegate to the Hauraki Plains Tennis Association, Mr A. R. Vowles. On an expression qf opinion being sought as to the method of playing the association’s competitions, it wa s agreed that the knock-out system was not satisfactory, but no decision was reached, the. matter being left to the delegate to act as he thought best. Very itroijg views were expressed at the action of clubs in failing to commence inter-club matches on t>*me, and the; delegate was instructed to urge the association to take a firm stand in the matter.
NGATEA. TENNIS-CLUB. The Ngatea Tennis Club neld its annual meeting, on Mofi|day evening, Mr C. Ber.telsen presiding qver a dozen members. Reporting on the year’s working, Mr Bertel sen said that the membership had shown an increase of seven. Improvements had been made to. the courts, anjd provision had been made for thei asphalting of ’he two remaining courts and the top-dres ing of the others before opening day. The financial position had caused some worry, but satisfactory arrangements had been made. The.- officers appointed were as follows > Patron, Mr E. L. Walton.: preside,nt, Mr C. Bertelsen ; vice-president. Mr H. Dent; secretary, Mr A. E. LudIqw ; treasurer, Mr E. A. Mahoney.; auditor. Mr C. S. Foster; committee, Messrs E. R. Alexander, K. Clare, R. C. Abel, E. Simpson, Mesdamei:, Reed and Bertelsen, Misses Rountree and Pa.ul; delegate to Hauraki Plains Association, Mr E. A- Mahoney ; club captain,, Mr .E, Coppinp; ladder com-, nfittee, Mrs Reed and Messrs E. Coppins and E- A. Mahoney. The delegate to the association, was instructed to advocate the playing of the interclub competition in one round of all clubsl Opening day was fixed for November 13. To raise funds it was agreed tha.t a concert, anil; also a dance, be crganh.ed, and a committees was appointed to go into the details.
NETHEBTON. CHEESE FACTORY. The. question of reopening the N.Z. Co-operative Dairy Co.’s Nethertqn cheese factory was discussed at a ■ small meeting of suppliers yesterday morning. t Mr G. Buchanan, loca.l d*idirectqr, a ndj Mr W. Dixon, cheese superintendent, were present. Mr Dixon quoted etimatefe for preparing, the factory for work at £3701 lis, being £2893 15s fqr. installing plant and machinery, £305 for renovation to the factory buildings, £152 for renovations to factory dwellings, and £350 for a new. wharf. A new; wharf might not be required, 'as investigations were being made in regard l to a long boom. The share basis required would be one share to 501 b of but-ter-fat, but this basis would be increased if the Supply warranted; Transfers would be effected on the basiis of two cheese shares for one butter share. It was desirable to secure .1200* cows, but nothing wbuld be d'one. until a minimum of 1000 cows was guaranteed. The question was discussed at length, and' it was agreed that a ca.nvass of the district be made. The agreement ,to supply would not be effective unless 1000 cows were guaranteed for four years. KEREPEEIII. SOCIAL AFTERNOON. A very pleasant and! financially satisfactory social afternoon and “bring and buy” sale was held by the Kerepeehi branch of the Plunket Society in the hall on Tuesday afternoon. Entertaining items, were, given by Miss Rogers and Mr Whitehead,' a short sketch was presented by Misses B. Basham and K. Barriball, and a pretty dance, arranged by Mrs E. C. Barriball, was given by Misses Paid, Chatfield, Basham, and Barriball. Competitions were held, the prizewinners being Mesdames Hines and Hayward, while Mesdames Cotter and Boswell secured the consolation prizes. Afternoon; tea was 'served, and goqd business was done; at the stall.
