WAIHI V. HAURAKI PLAINS. LAST SATURDAY’S MATCH. Hauraki Plains sent very ImOV team to Waihi on Saturday last to oppose the Waihi representatives in. the Poland Cup competition. Only ten 01 the selected players, made the trip, anti the team was made -up by the ihr elusion of three other, seniors and two juniOirS; However, as is often the easie when a scratch team is fielded, a fine game was played, an.d at times the position seemed favourable foi the Plains side. The following were the teams Plains—F. Scott, J. McPherson, F. Mulgrew, J. Dobbs, J. Catlin. H. Wright; W. Catlin, A- Courtney, R. Benny, H. Martin, A. Kelk, W- Beasley, A. Schofield, H. Kirkman, S. Dalgety. Waihi.— Berryman, McDermott, Thorntaji, Garvey, Dillimore, Saunders, Snodgrass, Hume, Craig, Radford , Roileston, Peacock, Walters, Robimmi, Parkhurst. Plains kicked off an,d was immediately awarded a free kick, but Courtney’s attempt failed and Waihi forcc'u. Open play fallowed in .neutral territory until Berryman made a good line kick which sent play to Plain’s end. From a scrum Waihi rushed to the. line, where a penalty relieved f Ol Plains. Open play, with much pa.sing by the Wsyhi back®, followed, and ag,ain| a free kick based the position for the visitors,. Play worked to midfield, and was- very fast. Mulgrew broke aw.ay but over-ran, the ball, and after, a scr.um on Waihi’s; line the hqipe team was aw.a.rdqfli a penalty kick which went out at the halfway flag. The. Plains forwards gained ground but failed to score with a Penalty kick. A long kick compelled Scott to force. Several scrums eventuated. in Plains’ twehlty-five, with the home team gaining ground until a, force resulted. Wright relieved from a dangerous position, but Waihi returned to the attack and tight play ensued on the Plains’ line until the chahge-'ove’r. Waihi commenced the second round with an attack. Free kicks sent the play up and down the field until frdm a scrum Waihi rushed broke away and Hume scored the first try, which Berrymapj converted. Waihi 5, Plains, 0. The. kick-out was returned and 1 followed up, and Waihi had a penalty kick at goal but faled to, score. Hard play o,n the visitor:-’ lin;a terminated with Wright forcing. Waihi returned to the attack, and after several scrums on the. line Berryman added another, three, points, to Wajhi’s scojre’ wiith a penalty kick. W,a.ihi 8, Plains 0. iMulgre.w, who had changed to rover. broke away from a line-out and Shifted operations to Waihi’s corner. The. visitors secured frqm the sprum, but a wild pass by Courtney, who- had changed .to centre, spojlt the movement. Plains again worked up to the corn-er, but the ball went out in touch. After half-time, play wasi close, with Plains gaining ground and reached Waihi’s line. Kirkman toqk a penalty kick awarded for obstruction but failed to score. Hard play continued in Waihi’s territory until a long kick found the line, in Plains’ twen|ty-five. Courtney and Wright, the outstanding back, made a good-run, .a.nd Mulgrew carried on to score at the pqsts. Kirkmap; failed to convert. Waihi 8, Plainfc 3. A passing rush by Waihi went to the Plains corner flag, but W. Catlin relieved from the scrum. A kick by J. Catlin toqk play to midfield, .and gradually the play worked to Waihi’s end. Courtney and Wright indulged ill. a good passing rush but outpaced their supporters. Ini close play Waihi gained ground, andi though Scott saved several times with great speculators play remained, on Plains line. A number of scrumsl took place, the defenders hooking qn every occasion. A Plains rush took play to Waihi’s end apd time was called-. The last quarter commenced with open play in- neutral territory until Berryman broke away to the Plains line, where Mulgrew crowded him qut. Another Waihi rush was stopped by Scott andi Courtney. Play remained in plains’ twenty-five, Kelk and Courtney doing good defensive work. Waihi persistently attacked with passing rushes; until from a, scrum on Plains? line. Hume dived over. Berryman converted. Waihi .13, Plains 3. Mr A. Wlmtford, of Te Aroha, was referee. The Plains team w.as hospitably entertained after the match. ...
