SUPPORT YOUR TOWN.

THE MAKING OF A TOWNSHIP. WORDS OF WISDOM. A great deal of controversy has lately been going on at Waihi with reference to the above important subject. From an article contributed by Noel Haszard, which appeared iji the Waihi Daily Telegraph, we extract the following, the concluding, paragraph of which appl'es to Paeroa as .well a.s to Waihi A sharp report, a wisp of smoke curls up, and off they go ! On hoir.seback and 1 on foot, sailor and storekeeper, clerk and labourer, off up the valley, lured by the yellow gleam of gold.

Thus did one insignificant shot from a gini open, up a region of untold treasure, From Kanangahake the earth wasi yielding 'ts wealth, and it was not long before the miner’s pick found its waj - to what has become our own town (Waihi). Manuka and fern yvere cleaned to make way fo.r civilisation, and* like mushrooms in March weather housessprang up, the rumbling of quartz mills was heard, and all was a hive of industry. Miners needed the necessaries of life as much as anyone-, and shops were built,. Wai'hi became a thriving town. A town of any size needs as much money in it as possible, and this is the most important reason why we shquld support our own shops. The more we can keep our. money in the town the better shall the town be. Our own particular I'it.tle Parliament, the Borough Council, wa.nts revenue, even as the Parliament cjf any country does. -We see stamped on envelopes or painted- on advertisements, “Buy New Zealand-made Goojds,” which means, “Don’t let foreigners drain our resources.” Just as important is the slogan “Shop in youn own town, and build up its prosperity.”
