A DESIRABLE WORK.
IMPROVING THE CEMETERY.
CLEANING UP THE PATHS.
As a result of a, letter, which appeared in the “Gazette’’ a few weteks ago, written by Mr L. Pai’lby, an erstwhile resident of Paeroa, the Pukcrimu Cemetery is just now undergoing much-needed renovation. ’ Mr Parlby’s letter was, to the effect that the cemetery appeared somewhat neglected and lacked proper, attention. The Ohinemurj County Council quite endorsed the writer’s remarks, but owing to the, impecunious condition of the cemetery fund was not a,ble to r.elie.ve the position, toj any extent. However, the best is now' being done consistent with ways and means. There were quite a number of visitors to th|e. cemetery on; Sunday who were pleased to note the improvement already made. The pathways are be’ng cleared of weeds and other undergrowth, while other work is also being carried out. It is hoped the. cpjuhcil will be able to see its way clear to cut down the blackberry and other -noxious weeds -that have taken strong root oyer ancient graves of the departed whose names are still remembered. In most of these cases the relatives have long since left Paeroa, or, may be interred themselves in tsojme other cemetery. in other cases, \vhere relative's are .still living, in the district, the council cannot reasonably be expected to clear the neglected plots, and it is hoped that those interested will be able tq find a little’ -time to help the council as far a,s possible in -its work of renovation, by lending a helping hand i'p the direction indicated.
