ASSESSMENT COURT.
YESTERDAY’S SITTING AT PAEROA THE CASES DEALT .WITH. A sitting of the Assessment Count was held at the Municipal Chambers, Paeroa, yesterday, the president., Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., presiding over Messrs J. c. Potts, Gov'e.rnmen.t Assessor. North Auckland La,nd District; W- F. Wallis, district tend valuer; G. Buchanan and H. M. s,essors Ohinemiiri Chunty; H. A. Mills, assessor, Hauraki Plains County ; J. Kernick, Thames Borough; and L. J. Stanhway, secretary.
The greatest number of objections to valuation,s came from ra l in various parts of the Ohi'nemuri i County. Of the nin,e objections lodged six were struck o.ut on account ofthere being nq appearance of the objectors. The obj’e-et.ion of Mr W. Watson, of. Thames (Mr E. A. Porr.itt). who, owns a block of land in, the vicinity oif Waimarie Bend, Kaimanawa riding, was sustained. Four objections in the Waikinq lading were struck out. When the case of F. Batcher., of Waitekaura, who owns a- section of 3 ■ roods 17 perches- in tire- Waitekauri tojwnship, was called, the president pointed out that the capital value was only £l5, the unimproved value £5. and the improved value £lO. It was a small matter, on which to object. Mr, Butcher pointed out that the area was only a residence site which had been taken up through fine Warden’s Court. There wiere no buiildings on thei sectiqn,. a,nd the value assessed was greatly in excess of the actual value to him. The president said that if life reduced the capital value to half (£7 10s), the rate's would amount to under 2s a year, and it would! tajee about ten'years to clear his expenses incur-’ red that morning in attending the Count. -» Evidence was tendered by’ Messrs Corbett and Wallis which showed that nearly all such sections had been as- ' sefied on the same: basis. It would be a.bsurd to assess improvements at less -SW than £5. The president agreed, and ordered the valuation, to be sustained. The application of E. G. Anderson, Bulltown Road, Waihi. for a reiluct'qn on an area of 49 acres in the Waihi riding, was next considered. The objector stated that his la,nd had been assessed on a capital value of £75, with an un;tmpr.o,ved value of £5O, the improvements being set cjown at £25. His contention was that the valuation was unfairly high in view of the fact that the tend had -gone balck to blackberry and bracken fern, ■a,n,d was unfenced. After, hearing the eyidfenqe. of Mr Corbett the Court agreed to reduce the valuation, making the capital value £6O, unimproved value £5O, and the vajliug of improvements £lO. HAURAKI PLAINS COUNTY. Campbell Johnston, .applied fo.r a reduction on; a capital value of £3120, unimproved value £2500, on a 98-acre farm at Nga;tea. He. asked that the capital value be reduced to £2500. He was prepared to offer the place to the Government at that price, despite- the faqt that it had cost him £2700 andj thaft £l3O had recently been expended on improvements. The president said that the application would have to be sustained. Mfi Johitstojn would have to offer the prw perty to the Valuer-denieral, ' who would either resume the land a,t the figure offered or reduce the assessment to an equivalent value. THAMES BOROUGH. SLx objections were received from residents witfijn the Thajnes Borojigh. Of these, four were sustained and ’onfe was wtihdrawn. IVIIATS THE BEASON.
