PAEROA BOWLING CLUB.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING.

PREPARATIONS FOR NEW SEASON

The 24th qnnual general meeting of the Paeroa Bowling Club was held at idle Soldiers’ Club last night, the president (Mr C. T. Mcttam) presiding over a large attendance of membei.s.

The annual report was read by the a.cling-.secretary (Mr G. H. Taylor) as follows :—

"Your committee has pleasure in presenting the 24th annual report for your consideration. The past season was in mn.ny ways mo/e enjoyable than previous ones, a special’ factor to this end being the Daylight Sa,ving Act, which gave members more time on the green, and caused a grealter interest to be taken in the competitions. ‘'Official Opening.—The season was opened on October 8, 1927, in good ’weather, when all clubs in the goldfields were represented. “Membership.—The membership jpf the club no.w stands at 54, of wham about 50 are playipg members. “Resignations.—Your committee liegrots tha.t it has to report the resignations of several members, among those being that of Mr, AV. Purdie, whose services as a playing membeK and as secretary for the pa,st f<Aur seasons, have been a great factor in the success of the club. “Financial.—The finances of 'Uie club are not in as strong a position as could be wished, as the receipts for last season were /ess than the expenditure.

“The ’Green,—The state of the green during the past season, largely the result of summer drought, caused your committee, to recommend the Borough Council to secure the services of Mr M. Darke, of Hamilton, to submit a report on- the best way to bring the green back to first-

class condition. As a result of hi s report the hedges ha.ve been removed and the: green has been forked all over by voluntary help from members, and it is intended to top-dress the surface with light soil. It is confidently hoped that as a, result of the extra amount spent on the green, the members will enjoy a better playing surface during ,the forthcoming season.

“Inter-club Matches.—. Six interclub matches were played during the

session, two, against Te Aroha, both being lost; two against AVaihii, one being a loss and one a Win ; the c.thers against. Waikino and Hikutaia being won. Paeroa and Hikutaia clubs also-, entertained the Taranaki representatives .at Paeroa, and succeeded in defeating the visitors. Clothier. Shield and Goldfields -Stars Competition.— This was held in Te Aroha. last season, when a Paeuoa rink, skipped by Mr AV. H. Taylor, won A section, but was defeated' by a Matamata team, the winners of the other section. The Matamata team also won the champion of champions rink competition at Hamilton.

“Nighit Play.—The night play-.re-turns showed a considerable increase over the previous season’s results. This is accounted for by the favourable season, and l more especially by the keen and active interest taken in tine game by the ladies. Op many evenings the green was fully occupied, and the pleasure given .to the ladies and their friends justifies o.nce more the installing of the nightPlaying facilities. As the profits from night-play tvill in future, materially help in increasing the club’s revenue, it should! be soon possible to proceed with much-needefl improvements -to the pavilion. “Club Competitions.—The following were the winners c.f the various competitions held during the season : Brenan Shield Messrs. J. H. McDonald, W. Ba,relay. W. L. Gibb, and WPurdie (skip) ; A grade singles, Mr W. Purdie ; B grade singles, Mr C- H. Pascoe; handicap pairs, Messrs. J. Morland and C. T. Mettam. “Several holiday tournaments we’le played off during the season, and proved very enjoyable. The singles and pairs competitions were played under a system recommended by Mr P. Bygrave, of Te Aroha, and very satisfactory competitions even;tuaited.

“Thanks.—The thanks the dlub

are due to the. president,, Mr C- T. Mettam, who dischA r ged the. duties attached to his office with gfeat satisfaction to his fellow members of the committee, and. we feel sure, tq the members generally; to, those members, Messrs, w. N. Chamberlain, W. J. Towers, and C. T. Mettam, who so generously donated trophies for competitiqns ; to the selector, Mr; G. P. die Castro, for his services rendered to further, the interests of the club ; and tq those members who so willingly gave their services on Saturday afternoojis in the winter to help in forking the: green. ‘Thanks ar,e also due to the ladies whq helped in diispensing hospitality when the club was entertaining visitors, to all friends, both ladies and gentlemen, who supported the club by their active interest in night play, and to tne local Press for its support in so. readly giving publicity to our activities, thus helping materially to benefit the club.

“In .conclusion, your committee sincerely trusts that the forthcoming season will be more enjoyable and successful than the past has been, and hopes that all members will extend to the new committee, in its endeavour to work for .the club’s prospeiity, the same whole-hearted support that has been accorded to the present officers.”

In reply to Mr J. W. Silcock the secretary said that the Domain Board ha,d credited the club with £lB 17s from night play receipts, which left the club a credit balance o.f £3 13s Hd from that department. The club last season did not deem it necessary to retain the usual 25 per cent. A query was raised by Mr G. P. de Castro to .the effect that £37 Os 9d,

had been spent bn refreshments, but only £l6 5s 9d had been received by way of the Saturday afternoon levy. He asked where the. difference came in.

The secretary pointed out that the cost of refreshments had been £2 less

th;an for. the 1926-27 season. Perhaps the difference cQuld be accounted by the fact that each, member had not paid the. 6d levy each Saturday. Mr W. J. Towers pointed out that the 6d levy was not included in the annual subscription. The president said that the cost of entertaining the Taranaki bowle-rs was oyer £l2, of which sum it was hoped to recover £4 from the Hikutaa Club. After a brief discussion the balancesheet was adopted. NEW MEMBERS. The following new members were elected: Messrs A‘. E. Surrey, A. Overall, and H. M. Shand. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. , On being elected as patrem Mr C. T. Mettam returned thanks foil the honour conferred upon him, and 1 paid a tribute to the executive committee and the members for their hearty cooperation apd valuable help. He paid a special tribute to, the work of the acting secretary, Mr G. H. Taylor, who. he said, was not only a competent bojwler, but was a member who had done sterling work. Continuing, Mr Mettajii said that with the completion of the alterations to the green a big improvement would n© doubt be effected, term aS president had been a happy one, and lie had been loyally backed up by ap enthusiastic committee'. He .wished the incoming ojfficers a happy term of office and a successful season. Other officers elected were : President, Mr J. W. silcock ; vice-presi-dents,, Messrs T. H. Hale and W. L. Competitions decided upon were Brenan Shield matches, A and B handicap pairs competitions, and fi>Vtyear players’ competition, AVi.th reference to the Brenan Shield competition Mr Mettam moved that it be a fixed four, and that substitutes be permitted with the. approval of the skips and selector, irrespective of the position of the team, and got more than two subsittutes in any ene. team. Seconded) by Mr Wilkins ( on. J\lr E. Edwards said he did no.t think that the skips should be consulted, and . contended that - the selector should have discretiofiary power- He mojved as an amendment to that effect. Seconded by Mr ,W. Smith. Mr de Castro said that as selector he did got wish to get into conflict with skips and have the game held up.. Tlyi amendment was carried. A further amendment, moved by Mr F. Marsh, was. not acceptable to the meeting. A suggestion was put forward by Mr Edwards that an umpire or. a protest committee' should be appointed. After a brief discussion the president was appointed umpire for all competitions. TIME OF PLAY. In view of the fact that there was no daylight saving tliis year Mr AVil-. kinson suggested that play should commence at 2.30 instead of 3 p.m. Mr Towers objected, and said that a hardship wojuld be inflicted on many players if 2.30 p.m. was decided upon. This view was shared by Mr Edwards, and on a vo.te being taken it was decided to adhere to 3 p.m. for starting the Brenan Shield matches. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. The- presentation of trophies was made by the pati’on, who congratulated the winners on the success which ha,d attended their efforts.
