PLAINS COUNTY.
REPORTS BEFORE THE COUNCIL.
INSPECTION AND FINANCE. Mr IV. White, inspector for the Hauraki Plains County, reported to the council on Thursday as. follows : — DOG REGISTRATIONS. “Satisfactory results have b ,<? en obtained in response to the notice sent to dog owners within the county.” Cr. Madgwick expressed, the view that the tone of the letters was harsh, and that it wduld have been better not to have .threatened to prosecute so suddenly. The clerk stated that he had drafted the letter, which merely stated the law. Notice had been given in the newspapers in January that fees were payable at the county office within 14 days. Councillors agreed that the position was satisfactory. BILLIARD SALOONS. “One billiard saloon remains unlicensed. Calling on the owner e t n the 6th inst., advice was again given that re-registration should at once be made. I was informed that a communication had been sent to the chairman; STRAYING CATTLE “Two horses have been impounded at Ngatea. The owner when found will be prosecuted. “I should like to call the attention of the council to the condition of the pound at Ngatea the shelters having become useless. “The poundkeeper at Wai.takarunu informs me that on one occasion a number of pigs were impounded, and as there is no proper place to keep them, he asks that the master, be considered with a view to a suitable fixture being erected.” It was decided to obtain estimates of the neecssary work. BUILDINGS. “During the month .permits for work amounting to £B5O have been issued—two dwellings, two sheds, and three garages. Inspections have been ma.de of buildings in course of erection, NOTICE BOARDS. “I have obtained prices for these, required under the Motor Regulations, for your, consideration.” —Referred to the works committee. FINANCE. BUSINESS FOR THE MONTH. The treasurer, Mr E. A. Mahoney, included the following items in his report for July :— “Rate Arrears. —A drive-' is being, made for these, and the condition of the rate arrears bQok is gradually improving.
“Patetonga Roads Loan. —Sanction for the raising of this loan lias been received' from the Local Government Loans Board, and I am going ahead with the procedure as quickly as possible.
“Loaii Moneys.—There is a big probability of my being able to raise £5OOO, Ng.atea riding loan ; £5OOO, Patetoiiga riding le t an ; and £9oo..Ngataipua Road loan, a .t a. rate of 53<j pci: cent, if successful, this will effect a considerable saving to the ratepayers. ' ‘
“The local Authorities’ Handbook for 1928 has just come, to hand. A table showing for each county the percentage of salaries to revenue and to payments for the year is published. The average percentage on revenue throughout the Dominion' is 5.24, the Hauraki Plains percentage: being 3.98. The average percentage on expenditure throughout the Dominion is 3.27. while for Hauraki Plains it is 1.42. “The receipts for the month'of July totalled £925 19s Id', being £638 Ils 7d from rates, £lO2 Cs 6d from the Pipiroa ferry, £lB 5s lid from the Koinata, ferry, .and £lO6 19s from licenses and fees.”
