PARKING OF CARS.

POSITION AT PAEROA STATION.

RECOMMENDATION OF POLICE.

The question of the b<?-st method of parking motor vehicles nt the rear of the Paeroa railway station was considered- at the Borough Council meeting last night. The matter was, introduced by the receipt of a- letter from the sergeant of police, who, ip referring to the circumstapees surrounding the death of Mr M. Quane, who was knocked down by a. motorcar. backing ou,t from the station on August 2, stated- that the evidence went to show that the practice of motor-cars backing out from the railway station entrance was; a danger .to pedestrians apd persons riding bicycles, as the vision of the driver of the motor vehicle was to a great extent obscured as to what conditions obtained- immediately at tlie rear of his viehi.de when backing out. The coroner, the borough solicitor, and lie were of the opinion that it would be much bettor if .motor vehicles arriving at the station backed into, the .entrance instead of following, t-he practice now in vogue. “The reason I make this suggestion,” the writer continued, “is becausp there are more people about the road* after the- train has arrived- than before, and) that by backing into the station entrance it gives; drivers of motor vehicles a clear view whep leaving the station, and -thus avoids any undue risks Which at present exist.”

The Mayor (Mr W. Marshall)- said that the matter had been discussed at tb e council’s committee meeting. It was difficult -to- suggest off-hand what was t'he best to dd. He did not think the .suggestion of the police wo,uld solve the difficulty. As the Railway Department w-as involved, and also the users of the motor vehicles, c.a.re-full investigations required -to be made. Cr. Flatt said- that in hi,si position as coroner, he 'had already expressed his views, which were definite on the matter. He had already looked into the suggestion qf the police'. It would- be better for him not to act on the committee from the cou.neil. It was resolved that Crs. E. Edwairdis; and P. E. Brenan be a committee to investigate the suggestion in conjunction with the local stationmaster.
