At. last night’s meeting of the Paer,oa 'Borough Council the Mayor, referring to unemployment, reported that there were 15 married men, lo,cal residents, employed on ,th.c unemployed relief works in the borough. One, would hardly have crediteif that there were so many men requiring .work It showed the value of the move made by the council in providing relief for the married men in the town.
The gross public debt of New Zealand as at Ma.rch 31 last was £251,396,252, which sum shows a, net increase of £5,545,363 for the last, financial year.
The finance committee reported a.t last night’s meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council that during the past month .the revenue in the: district fund account amounted, to £1771 13s 10d, ncluded a refund of £4OO from the house sewerage connections loan account. . The expenditure totalled £lO6O 14s. Credit balances were shown in the following: Swimming baths account, £9l Ss 7d ; Council Chambers ‘account, £39 10s 9d ; 1920 street improvements account, £ll9 18s 6d ; Cr iterion b'Bidge account, £B2 4s Id. Debit balances were shown in the' house sewerage connectio-nis ■loan account, and the sewerage loan account of £614 18s lid and £l3 2s 6d respectively.
Included in the team selected by the executive of the. National Rifle Association to represent New Zealaiul at the Victoria meeting, at Melbourne in February next is Captain H. Simmonds. secretary of tlie Paeroa Defence Rifle Club, and ex-Dominion champion rifle shot. *
Two permits, to the value of £324, were granted at last night's- meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council.
In reply to representations made, .tile Pae'i'oa, Borough Council has been advised by the Valuation Department, that the valuations of the boro.ugh were to be revised on March 31, 1929. The department asked that it be advised of airy inaccuracies in area, off owpetehip, in order that, the new roll might be as correct as possible.
In the Financial Statement presented to Parliament by the Minister of Finance it is statetl that revenue from taxation per head of population of tlie Dominion now amounts to £ll 8s sd.

It was reported by Cr, J. Pinder to the Borough Council meeting last 'night that a number of cows had ge ( t into the Range Street reserve and had done considerable damage to .the' plantation of young trees-. The Mayor, said it was a shajiie that the stock had go-t in, especially when the trees were thriving well and 95 per cent, of the number planted had grown. A councillor stated that lie had been told that the cattle belonged to the borough ranger.
