CRUSHING BATTERY.
COUNTY FAVOURS SCHEME. DISCUSSION AT COUNCIL MEETING At the meeting of the Ohinjemur.i County Council on Thursday . the matter of stipporflng the- proposal for a State Crushing Battery was introduced by the' cha.irman. He said, he had carefully, considered the proposal by the committee/set up to deal with the matter., and was of the opinion that the proposition arrived at was the-best that had yet been formulated, and was sound and practical. When the Minister of Mines was in the district some: months ago, hp said that he would be prepared to._consiider a proposition that would assist the mining industry, and the speaker was -of the opinion that the decision now reached by the committeje was worthy of being placed before him. Therp wa.s one thing certain : if any local body would benefit it was the OhinemuH’i County. The deliberations of the committee had been pretty thorough, and he thought that the county should back up the proposals and thus, assist in, endeavouring to get a battery ip the district. He moved:■ “That this Council hereby support the proposals as arranged between the District O* ushing Committee and the Rising Sun Company for a State- s übsidiset crushing plajit, and is of opinion that such an arrangement will materially assist ill renewed prospecting activity in this district, and respectfully asks the Minister of Mines and thfe member for. the district to give the proposal their earnest consider ation when the subject comes, before them. Cri Morris, in seconding the resolution, saidi that he was not at present Interested in a State batten <y as e had a plant of .'his own, but he was sure they werp moving in the night, way, and he' favoured th|e council giving its whole-hearted, support to the proposition. Or. Hubbard said tha,t be had followed the movement and' could' endbrise what had been said. ■ ■ Cr. Johnstone said that. he would like to know what liability the county would be under. The chairman replied that tlne.eou.ncil would not be under any liability. Or. Johnstone : “Yes, but supposing the'Risipg Sun. Mine only lasted! a year or two ; would •it pay to cart ote ?” ' .
Cr. Morris said that, he ,wa,s interested. being mine manager, and hje. would like to reply to that qriesrion. The battery, he said was in a central "place, and he instanced that in the ea,rly daySoi’e was taken, over the hills by pack horses to Hikutaia, and then carted to the Thames for crusjhinfl. The Rising Sun had at least five or siix years’ work in sight at the: present time ; besidtes, there were numerous prospecting parties now at work. He thought the proposition was, a good one.
Cr. Mason said th.a.t he thought the county would be lacking in its duty if it did not support the nfovement. .The resolution was. then put and unanimously.
